On-going Yeast Infection?

It has been over 2 months of my vagina producing a white thick substance, and it hurts everytime that I have sex or any penetration. I have been on birth control for over a year, and my doctor put me on diflucan and a pH balancer and nothing seems to be clearing up. What do you think it is?

Hi!  Usually when my patients give a similar description of symptoms, it turns out to be yeast, so Diflucan is a good medication to start with.  If symptoms persist, I will often do a wet mount (look at the discharge under the microscope) a pH test (helps to distinguish yeast from bacterial infections (home tests can be purchased at your local drug store)
and sometimes  a culture.  I would usually rule out gonorrhea and chlamydia just as a routine part of my protocol too. Yeast cultures can be done, but are pretty tricky to do, so sometimes if my patients don't get relief right away from one diflucan tablet, I'll retreat or even treat  daily for a couple of weeks.
Birth control can make you more prone to yeast.
Some natural remedies to try are acidophilus and yogurt with live cultures of lactobacillus.
Hope that helps!
