I would be careful with antibiotics.  I went through a year of alternating BV/Yeast infections.  The antibiotics for the BV would kill off all the bacteria, including the good bacteria which would then cause a yeast infection.

What worked for me was to irrigate my vagina with hydrogen peroxide 3% (the kind you can buy off the shelf at the drug store).  I would just get a syringe and fill it up and insert it vaginally and release it.  I'd then hold it in (clench your muscles down there) and then release to let it drain out...doing that 2-3 times while sitting on the toilet.

That cleared my BV, which I verified, by checking my vaginal PH, which was then back to normal the next day (4.5).  Before doing that my PH was 6.0.  Also, the fishy odor was also gone the next day.

When your vagina is normal and healthy it has lots of lactobacillus-- good bacteria.  These bacteria produce hydrogen peroxide, which keep other bad bacteria from moving in.  So when you don't have enough good bacteria you get infections like BV.  Washing yourself out with some peroxide will help kill off the bad bacteria and help the good bacteria flourish.  When you take antibiotics it will kill off a lot of your bacteria good and bad and leave you more prone to infections.

I would definitely recommend trying the hydrogen peroxide first, and if you're still having problems after a few days, then maybe it's time for some antibiotics.

Here is a study that shows it being as effective as antibiotics:

Hi!
I suppose it is possible.  More often it is probably due to an excessive amount ot the wrong type of bacteria.  Gardnerella Vaginalis is the organism that typically causes this symptom.  We call an infection with this organism Bacterial Vaginosis or BV.  It can be treated easily with antibiotics.  It is NOT a sexually transmitted disease.
Often the odor is worse after intercourse, and can be associated with a greyish or yellowish discharge and sometimes irritation.  It is possible to get test kits at drugstores such a Walmart to test yourself for BV--the kits test the vaginal pH to see if it is normal or not.
If you were my patient, I would do a wet mount (look under the microscope) and if there were clue cells there, I would prescribe Metronidazole for you.
I hope this helps!
