3rd generation ELISA result accuracy at 84th day

Hi Experts,

I am quite sure about hiv results and transmission scenarios. I am following this page for while now and also commented on some questions here. Yesterday while I was talking to one of my friend about my activity here, he posted a question to me. And I am not sure what to answer him.

Question: He had unprotected Anal sex with his new girlfriend and he tested exactly on 30th and on exactly on 84th day. (Not after 84 days or 85th day) and both the results are negative. As I know from what doctors told me and website told me, it must be at 12th week or at 84th day. According to me he is on 11th last day or 12th beginning. So what will be experts answer to him? Exactly on 84th day is conclusive or recommend to do test again? I am sure here in Guadalajara, Mexico there are no 4th generation test and it is 3rd generation ELISA test.

Many experts would consider a 6 week negative to be conclusive.

There is a logic behind that, the average time to sero-convert is 21/22 days. Body starts producing antibodies to HIV immediately after infection but even after sero-conversion though the body is already producing the antibodies, the detectable amount of antibodies by the test may be or may not be generated right away. It usually gets detected approximately 7 days post sero-conversion i.e 28 days.

Hence, to be sure with a buffer of 3 weeks from sero-conversion process - A 6 week test is recommended.

In your friend's case, it really doesn't matter if he tested at the 83/84/85 days, as he tested well after the aforesaid period. Even if I go with 3 months or 12 weeks standard as suggested by some experts - A day or two makes no difference really. He's in the clear.

Thank you
Psyntax_error. I will pass this information to him. I was sure about it but since he mentioned 3rd generation test I was little confused. I dont know why in 2017 still there are no 4th generation test in Mexico. I believe really Mexican government or some private organization has to take initiative to improve the testing methods as in many other parts of the world.
