Can HIV test actually give me HIV?

Last summer, I made a huge mistake of having sex with a prostitute. I had a protective vaginal sex with a her. I had a condom on and the prostitute did not look like a drug user. After it happened, I regretted doing it and swore I will never make this mistake again. And I forgot about it.

But only recently, this memory struck me and I became paranoid about the idea of having HIV.

I wanted to get tested, but I was too scared to go to a doctor or a clinic, which is why I decided to test it with a home test kit.

I went to Amazon and ordered a product called Urasure. When I received the package, instead of Urasure, a product called Ora-Well came. I was suspicious at first but my fear of HIV trumped my doubt. And used it to test myself and the test turned out to be negative. I was so relieved.

But only after a day, I got suspicious of the test. And I made the worst mistake of my life. I scraped off the white chromatographic immunoassay part of the test device to see if the pink line was still there after I scraped it off. I feel so stupid. Why did I ever do it? Now, I am worried sick and researching about this company that sold me test kit and how EIA and Western Blot testing work. And I found out that the product I used was not even FDA approved for not adulterating the test device. I do not know what it exactly means, but I know it is not good. And I found out that this company imported this testing kit from a Chinese company called Jiangsu Well Biotech Co., Ltd.

I read their product description and it said, “HIV-1/2 antibodies binding protein are precoated onto membrane as capture reagents on the Test region (T). During the testing, specimen is allowed to react with the colloidal gold reagents which have been labeled with HIV-1/2 specific antigens.”

I understand that HIV virus cannot survive for too long in open air, but since this is a test device, I feel like the HIV virus will still be alive in the test membrane and me touching might have given me the virus. Moreover, FDA banned selling this product because this product has not been adulterated.

What I want to know is if my stupid mistake of scraping off with my hand the test device can actually give me HIV that I did not even have?

Hi, welcome the forum. The first thing to say is that you didnt need to test in the first place. Protected sex is safe sex.

Secondly, you are at no risk from this 'exposure'. As you rightly say HIV becomes inactive on exposure to the atmosphere. In addition the only way for HIV to be transmitted is from inside the body, i,e. penetrative sex or IV drug use. It would not have gone through your fingers.

Teak, thanks for the quick and clear answer, but I am in a very devastated state of mind and a more elaborated explanation could help me. If you could, could you explain why you think the answer is no?

And thanks for your answer anyways.

The answer was to the point and doesn't have to be explained. No means no.

Thank you for your answer. It makes me feel better. But do you think the 'antigen' in the test device could still be alive and effective even in the open air after several hours due to the medical treatment or something?

No, HIV is HIV, it becomes inactive upon contact with the environment.

Can HIV be transmitted this way? I have the same concern because I used a test from the same company and got the dilutent in my mouth by accident. I'm worried the "company" tainted with the test kit and somehow that liquid infected me.  I didn't have any symptoms until that happened. Is that a possibility for the virus to live in a liquid solution?
