Concerns with taking poppers?

Went out last night, had a few drinks. A couple of my friends got some poppers from this lesbian (dunno why it matters on her sexual orientation, just work with me), and asked me to have some. I wasn't sure about it, and was reluctant, but I'd had a few drinks so I just did it. I did them a couple of times, apparently I was doing it wrong, cuz I felt normal, so did a couple of long ones. Sort of felt something but not properly. Woke up with a major headache this morning; I don't get hangovers so am presuming it was from the poppers.

Anyway, I did a quick search online and apparently they're 'more or less' safe, but they can have some effects. I'd gotten some on my skin yesterday but wiped it off, so I haven't burned myself. I've also read it can temporarily lower the effects of your immune system, which is worrying me because yesterday/today I've started coming down with a cold/chest infection, and was wondering if anything bad can happen?

Would I catch anything from taking poppers?

HIV is transmitted by:

Unprotected anal or vaginal sex
Sharing IV drug works
From mother to child.

You have to have engaged in one of these activities to be at risk.
