HIV test results are they conclusive

Doctor

I had protective latex condom sex with a HIV positive female. Once I found out the women was HIV positive due to her contacting me to tell me she just tested positive I got concerned that I might of been infected with HIV. At (10) weeks post exposure I had a RNA PCR VL test done with the results reading as below:

Test: HIV RNA by PCR
Results: <20 copies/mL
HIV-1 RNA not detected

At (81) days post exposure I did a OraQuick Rapid HIV 1 & 2 oral test that read nonreactive at (81) days post exposure.

Can I consider my results conclusive since I test (3) days before the (3) month window period? Does the RNA PCR VL test for all HIV-1 groups and subtypes, also does the OraQuick Rapid test for all of HIV-1 and HIV-2 groups and subtypes? My exposure was outside the United States, but testing was done in the USA.

Welcome to the Forum.  You did not get HIV from the exposure that you described.  Your combination of tests at the times they were taken are conclusive.

Concerns about non HIV-1 or -2 subtypes of HIV are misplaced. For starters, while there are other types of HIV, even in the areas where they occur, the majority of infections are due to HIV-1. Secondly. When persons have non HIV-1/-2 virus, they do not get negative tests, their tests are typically equivocal which then leads to further testing an diagnosis of infection.

I am sorry for your exposure and still more sorry for your partner's misfortune to become infected.  you however, did not get infected through this exposure.  EWH

One more question. Do the labs in the USA check the RNA Real Time PCR test for all HIV-1 subtypes A, B, C, D, E, F, H?

I still have concern as I think I was exposed to subtype C and I was told that the USA labs only check for subtype B in RNA PCR tests.

HIV PCR cross reacts with all types of the virus.  Believe your results.  EWH

Dr. Hook.

My girl friend has just been diagnosed with Pityriasis Rosea by her dermatologist. Is this type of rash has anything to do with or related to acute HIV infection/ARS rash?

Thanks,
