Hep C & HIV transmission risk - penetration with one layer of clothes

Hi Dr,

I read before that you give "universal reassurance to questions about mutual masturbation, contact with potentially infected secretions in the environment, and most sexual exposures other than insertive sex." I was wondering if my situation applied to this no risk category.

I was with a girl of unknown status in Laos where the HIV subtype is more contagious. I was engaging in dry humping while she was naked and I was wearing one very thin layer of clothes. She moved my penis towards her vagina at one point and I believe I penetrated her for 2-10 seconds; thrusting inside with still one layer of clothes on. She was very wet at the time and on her period so there was some blood as well.
Would this constitute a need for testing? Could enough fluid have made contact with my mucous membranes for this to have any risk?

Thanks in advance for all the wonderful work your doing online. I don't have access to any HIV specialists in southeast asia -or doctors that have good English for that matter.

Well I was fairly drunk to be honest so my exact memory is hazy.

I do remember that she grabbed my member and moved it towards her vagina, and I remember pulling away once I realized it was in the 'danger zone'. I'm just not sure if the tip went in her vagina, and I think I may have thrusted a few times while the tip could have been partially in.

I don't know... blah.

Had you penetrated anyone you would have known.

i guess since i'm not sure i should err on the safe side and get tested, though if i had to bet money on it i don't think i penetrated her.

do you think that 3 month testing mark is a bit outdated given the accuracy of modern tests? I've read a few articles stating that for low risk exposure testing 6 weeks was a conservatively conclusive result.

If you inserted your penis INSIDE her vagina without a condom, you had a risk.  Clothing is not a proper protective barrier.  Your risk wouldn't be signifcantly high, but testing is warranted.  You can obtain your conclusive result 3 months after the exposure.

hm, that is concerning as the HIV subtype here is 2 - 20 times more contagious.

but the experts at AIDSvancouver said you couldnt get HIV through clothing, and actually just advised me not to bother with testing...
perhaps it was how i phrased the question? in this one i said i believe i penetrated her but in the other one i said i possibly penetrated her (as im actually not sure, but there is a possibility of up to 10 seconds i would say)

this is frustrating, i just got a negative HIV result a month ago and was looking forward not to worrying. i am adamant about condom usage but I didn't expect a girl to do that during dry humping, ugh.

Hiv is transmitted through unprotected vaginal and anal sex.

So yes this would constitute testing.
Anytime you penetrate a vagina without protection you are at risk, latex is the only effective protection against hiv.
On a positive note your risk is not that earth shattering, the odds of contracting hiv from a single exposure are 1-1000. Go get tested at the 3 month mark, stay off of google because it will drive you crazy. And drink plenty of fluids.
