How effective is Prep against hiv and can you still be infected with hiv while on it

I been on Prep for a few months now.  My doc said I must keep talking this medicine no matter what to prevent myself from getting hiv. He said I must get tested every 3 months while on the medicine. I made a mistake and had sex with a hooker with no condom a month ago. I guess I thought I was invincible cause of the prep but now I feel dumb cause I don't know if she has hiv.
I kept my promise to my doctor and told him I will not stop taking prep no matter what. How effective is prep against preventing hiv? Why did my doctor tell me that once I start prep I can't stop talking it

You only take Prep if you are in serodiscordent relationships.
