Is it obvious if a condom has broken?

I always thought it was obvious when a condom has broken. I remember once breaking one doing anal with a girlfriend - the condom looked completely destroyed and obviously broken when I pulled out.

However I've read lately that it possible to be unaware if a condom has broken unless we fill it up with water... Which sounds overly extreme to me.

You don't need to do that at all, when a condom breaks you can see it,it splits like a banana skin.

So no need to fill it up with water as I've read? Trust the eyes! If it comes off in one piece it's ok?!
