Hiv phobia after unprotected sex

Hi Dr,

First off I appreciate you for the help you are giving 1000s of ppl like me suffering with HIV phobia. I am 28 yr old asian male from Houston, Texas. I am sexually active and I have always used a barrier method while I was dating women. I get myself checked yearly though I use a condom and all the while last feb my antibody test came negative. Now that is my recent status. Recently, about a month back, I met a new friend. She is around 36 and a respectable job in a University. She has been divorced and currently single. We became friends in a short span of time and started to hang out. One saturday we drank too much and I had unprotected intercourse with her. I ejaculated outside her. The next morning when we woke up I was worried abt STDs and she was worried about becoming pregnant. Her pregnancy was ruled out but my paranoi with contracting any STD increased. Lately, after 1 month of exposure, I began experiencing cold, malaise, nasal conjestion, muscle aches and mild headache at the back of my neck and above and around my eyes. Throught this week I tried checking my temperature. It was never beyond 98.2 F . My symptoms were also very very mild. Three days after that I had a bad flare up of dandruff and I also had white dry areas on my face itching mildly. I consulted a dermatologist and he said it is facial dandruff in a mild form. I did have dandruff problem since many years. But the facial dandruff seemed a bit freaky. It is very mild. My question is that, could it be possible HIV exposure. I am in contact with my friend. I asked her sexual history she said she is pretty clean and before me she dated another guy. I cant pursue her more than that as she will take me for a freak. Based on your expereince should I get myself tested for HIV via the early detection PDR test. It is day 10 since I had those symptoms.I am feeling ok. Could the headcahe be HIV meningitis. Pardon me Dr, but I have so many doubts. If I get a chance I will always never drink and do sex. Kindly answer my question and I higly appreciate the support and help you are doing to people like me.

Thanking You In Advance,
Mr. S.

If you tested at 3 months post--exposure and it was negative then you are clear but a PCR is not a diagnostic HIV test,an antibody test or DUO test is.

Hi Dr,

Here in United States, Clean means that the person is free from STDs. It is a slang widley prevalent here. I just mentioned it as it is as told by the woman. You got me entirely wrong on this. Hope I clarified your misinterpretation of the vocabulary.

Hi,

I got tested. I got my results and are negative. I got a PCR test done and I am really happy. Antibodies were also negative. From what I see, most of the people, about 98% freak out. I was also one of them. Most of my friends also. As stated by most of the doctors and the CDC in about 25 days the antibodies show up in 70-80% of patients, unless they have some auto-immune disease like RA and SLE. The rest turn positive by 3 months. PCR test 14-28 days is very accurate. I wonder why FDA did not apporve it? It was limited to research values only. Nonethless, many labs provide it at a much higher cost. NEGATIVE IS A NEGATIVE FOR EVER. Period.
This is all a problem with phobia. I did unprotected and was freaking. But there are people who use condoms and freak out. You may catch HPV or HSV1/2 through condom break or tear or watever. But not HIV.

Bottom line- If you use condom correctly, do not bother about hiv. It is just your phobia. If it breaks also the chances are less. But, HSV and HPV are always right round the corner. You may get it on the scrotum or things from an infected partner.
If you have unprotected intercourse, unless with someone whom you know real well like gf/ ppl with known hiv status, always get urself checked. Especially with call girls, dont take a chance.

It is also very very important with whom we are engaging in sexual intercourse. Involving with high risk like call girls/ junkies / people with multiple sexual contacts.....Puts you at the risk of contracting these STDs. What if you cant......Then like most of the experts told here. ALWAYS USE CONDOMS AND PROTECT YOURSELF.

Life is beautiful. It is not meant to worry and suffer. Get yourself tested if you have unprotected intercourse. I highly appreciate the support given by the moderators and the Drs and the medical students and the health personnels here. You Rock....!

First of all a note to you

People with hiv are not dirty or unclean please stop making comments like clean and all that.

Now your question

You have had unprotected sex and you should test at 6 weeks and follow it up at 12 weeks.

USE CONDOMS for penetrative sex and you will remain hiv negative!!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!!
