Oral sex has a very small risk but finally a risk, there are a lot if variables that increse or reduce the risk, and there are a lot of studies, some said 0% risk others said 8% risk, but the CDC (by the way very conservative) says1 in 20000, in receiving oral sex an 1 in 10000 in giving oral sex (to man), that can be reduced with condoms, and increased if there is visible blood in the mouth or by eyaculating in the mouth,  and the other variables are the viral load of the hiv + partner (high at the beggining of the infection or if it`s not on meds or when hiv produced Aids), the inmune sistem of the hiv  negative partner, and a lot more of things, for example if someone gaves oral sex with no bleeding in his/her mouth to undetectable hiv positive partner with a condom the risk is a lot less than 1 in a million chances, but if someone gave oral sex a few minutes after being with the dentist and has an open wound in his/her mouth and receive the semen of the positive parter in his/her mouth the chance are bigger than 1 in 10000, so like the doctors says the risk depends on the circunstances and that is the reason for us to ask them to judge our risk, becouse 1 in 10000 doesnt means you can have 9999 unprotected oral sex and not being infected, you can have 1 and being infected or have 50000 and never get infected, the only thing until know that prevent hiv infection if is used always and correctly is a condom, so please use it.

Believe who you want man. If you already had your mind made up, why did you post the question.

I believe the study, but it's 1 in hundreds of studies done.  I'm not saying base your beliefs of this study.  I certainly don't.  You asked for information, I gave it.  I also showed you a graph on it being one in 50,000-100.000. It IS a risk.  There's documented cases of it, (unless you think those 8 guys and everyone who's claimed they got it from oral is lying) but it's rare.

There is no "how low" long one.  There are too many variables to calculate an exact number. There are only guestimates and clinical studies. Process it best you can.

I think that study has been shown to be flawed. I do agree that oral is low but how low,who knows. Dr's on this board seem to think it a rare thing to get infected that way. Good post though, thanks

Also, I don't think being gay has anything to do with it.  That's just my opinion.  Because the beginning of your topic was about gay and now you're asking about oral...So I don't want to confuse the two.  It's two separate issues...

Take it as you will man.  I consider 1 in 50,000-1 in 100,000 to be virtually no risk.  That's if you know they're positive.  This is just theoretical.  But there are plenty of studies that show the only method

From the CDC:

Interesting. I always wounder about the oral sex thing. In a recent post Dr.Hook or HHH stated they know of NO confirmed case of HIV though oral sex, yet almost all Dr. who treat people say they have people who swear oral is their only exposure. I think as Epidemiologist they are working under strict criteria.

Make note longone. This is only data as reported to the CDC up until 2004.

I believe there are more up to date figures, which we know are all hypothetical and really don't mean anything to anyone that has had unprotected sex. The only thing that has a meaning is the test and its result. Other than, that nothing else matters.

To answer your question:

As of December 2004, 44% of AIDS cases reported to the CDC were among men who contracted HIV through sex with other men (MSM).

Some data from our friendly CDC. Posted at aidsmeds.com

Everybody should presume every one has HIV and use the proper precautions when having sex with people of unknown status. HIV does not know or care if a person having anal sex is gay or straight. It just common sense. If you are not in a monogamist relationship with someone that you both know each other status you need to always be having protected sex.

"As much as everyone likes barebacking, it's not worth to take the risk, even if it's low.'

must be nuts in this day and age to do that. As far as oral I don't know. Dr. HHH and Dr Hook are experts and say very little risk. I know from my point I always worry but what's one to do; we are human and need sex. Safe sex with oral is pretty boreing stuff flavored or not.  Happy to see you posting, have a nice day

Well, that's the thing.  A gay male has to assume everyone he has sex with has HIV - I know it sounds harsh, but the prevalence is that high.  For a straight person this is not necessary, but it is better to use protection anyway outside of relationships.  Always better safe than sorry.  As much as everyone likes barebacking, it's not worth to take the risk, even if it's low.

I thought is was an interesting subject. I think alot of folks think everyone they come in contact with sexually has HIV. The facts [as the two good Dr.'s point out] do not support that fear.

Probably no exact stats exist, only estimates.
Around 10% of gay men in the US have HIV.

Hi there,

Seriously, I didn't know the answer.........to me, it does not matter how many gay or bi are HIV positive.  Because HIV do not recongised by a person sexual perference.

What matters to me more is the education of HIV/Aids and it's transmission to the general public.  How we can educate more people about STIs, including HIV, and its preventions.  And also to correct the impression that HIV is a gay virus (in my country, some thought most gay have Aids).

Cheers!
