Western blot confusion

I had an HIV test done today which is 13 weeks post exposure. As I was leaving my county health clinic, I noticed that my paperwork said " western blot" on it. After doing some research, I found out that you aren't supposed to have a western blot test done unless you have already had a positive Elissa test, which I've never had. What will this mean with my test result from the western blot? I'm very nervous as I want my test result to be as accurate as possible. Please someone help me understand what to expect when I pick up my test results.

Enough. You never had a risk and have been advised several times.

So HIV has absolutely nothing to do with HIV, or testing correct?

Lots of people don't get enough Vitamin D. Your main source of Vitamin D is from the sun or from foods high in protein such as fish and eggs. Just because you have low levels of Vitamin D does not mean you have HIV... that has nothing to do with your HIV test result.

No false negatives in the correct time frame do not happen.

Also, has anyone ever heard of a false "negative" test. I'm talking about after the 12 week mark

It's not sketchy... they know what test they gave you. Health departments know HIV tests are ELISA tests. You have nothing to worry about whatsoever. You were given the correct test.

I called the health dept this morning. They explained to me that that was not the test that I was given, instead it was just what showed up on the reciept. That sounds a little sketchy to me

Of course it was a waste.

So what you're saying is that the western blot was a waste?

Western Blot tests are confirmative tests. If you tested during the window period the test may not pick up the bands. You test three months post your last unprotected sex with the correct antibody test.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I have caught anything from my girlfriend, will this western blot test show it?

Not for the oral and fingering. Your risk is if you had unprotected vaginal or anal sex with your g/f. You should both test together before discontinuing condom usage.

Thanks for your advice. I'll call the clinic tomorrow and see what they have to say. Do you recommend that I retest with an elisa test?

It's extremely unlikely your girlfriend has HIV (given she is a non-IV drug user who has never had sex with a man who has sex with other men). The majority of people in the U.S. or other industrialized countries do not have HIV. That being said, any time you engage in unprotected sex, you indeed become responsible for your health and the health of others and need to test for STDs, including HIV. You did the right thing.

I'm not sure exactly what all you read on your paperwork. However, ELISA tests are the initial tests performed to diagnose someone as HIV positive or negative. Western blots are only used after an initial positive ELISA test, as you said. You should call your doctor's office and ask what specific test you were given as you should have taken an ELISA test and this is most likely what you had taken anyway.

You came here talking about fingering and oral sex and you didn't mention anything about unprotected sex with a g/f for 2.5 years?

The reson I'm testing is that I've been dating a girl for about 2 and a half years and haven't been tested before. I felt like it was a good time In my life to do so

I don't understand why you would test for a no risk issue.

Thanks for your quick response. I still don't understand why a county clinic would issue this test before the elisa test. What are my chances of a false positive?

You never had a risk to begin with and didn't need testing.
