What are my chances of having HIV?

About 4-5 weeks ago I had unprotected sex with my good friend (This was a heterosexual contact). We had sex 4 times. My anxiety level is high because I'm paranoid that I have contracted HIV based on my risky sexual behavior. I know I was completely clean before this contact. Within the past few days, I've had a high fever, chills, weakness, and I've been achy. It sounds like the flu, but I know it can also be possible early symptoms of HIV. I went and got tested for everything 2 weeks after the inital contact and everything came back negative, but I know the window period is 3 months. He's had multiple sexual partners (most, he claimed were virgins and he said he used a condom with everyone except me). He reassured me that he doesn't have HIV. He was also in the Army and his blood was taken a few times. They would discharge someone with HIV right? I'm so worried that I've contracted HIV. Are my chances high or do you think I'm just being paranoid? I have an appointment to get tested again in 2 weeks. Please give me your opinion. Thanks so much!

Though the Army wouldn't discharge a soldier for contracting HIV, it would definately have career changing ramifications and they would definately catch it and let him know. Has he deployed recently? HIV positive soldiers are non-deployable in accordance with international law; so if he has recently been deployed or is within a couple of months of a deployment you can safetly bet he doesn't have HIV.

1/250 is an ultraconservative quote for heterosexual transmission - What's usually quoted (including this site's experts) is 1/1000 and even that is considered conservative and the real risk is probably lower.

To answer your question - your being paranoid and I very much doubt you have anything to worry about at all.

hey, the chances of someone in the army having HIV are extremely low. Heck,  I really can't imagine it happening. Furthermore, if you had heterosexual sex then even if he did have HIV the chances of you getting it would be 1/250. However, I should tell you that there is really no point in getting tested before six weeks as you are very much in the window period and it won't alleviate your stress. Get tested at 6 and 12 weeks and that should let you know for sure.
