Worried about HIV

Hi, I am a 27 yr old female from Canada. 6 weeks ago while drunk and stupid I had unprotected sex with some guy for 5-10 minuets but he put on a condom before he ejaculated. 2 weeks after the encounter I became  sick with flu symptoms..stuffy, runny nose, sore throat, cough and aches and pains, this lasted about 7-10 days. And now 6 weeks after encounter I have sore throat again and a bit of a cough. I’ve also been getting horrible sinus infections. He says he’s clean and that he plays safe but yet he went without a condom with me for 5-10 minuets. I’m really worried and just wondering what my chances are of getting hiv in this one time encounter?

As advised by GuitarRox, chances of contracting HIV from a single isolated act of unprotected sex with someone of unknown health status are not very significant, however the risk is not zero either.

To rule out the possibility, the only way is to test. It is now over 6 weeks, therefore you may go and get yourself tested any time for a 4th generation HIV Duo test (very commonly available in Canada), collect your conclusive report, lay all your residual worries to rest permanently and move on with your life normally.

Nest time, never go unprotected with any one, outside your mutually committed totally monogamous long term relationship.

Chances are low from a one time encounter, but still a chance.  Your symptoms, though, are irrelevant and not likely related.  They do not diagnose HIV by symptoms, only by a test.  So, don't worry about those.  But since you had a risk, test now for an accurate result.  It's been six weeks, so you'll know after that one test.  But remember, the odds are in your favor that it will be negative.
