unprotected Sex with British female

Hi

About a week ago i had unprotected vaginal sex with a british born female.  She is mixed race paraguay or brazillian/British but has lived here her whole life.  She has told me that she has had under 8 sexual partners and had the all clear from the GUM clinic about a month ago.

When i woke up the next day i had pain in the lower abdomen and the constant need to urinate as well as tingling in the urethra.  This suggests she might have been lying about getting the all clear. I went to the GUM clinic and they gave me 1gram Azithromycin taking in one go (which 3 days after taking it doesnt appear to have done anything).

Anyway im very concerned about HIV as they said it takes 3 months to show up, although on these forums ive seen the docs say that 4 weeks is sufficient and that the 3 month guide is a belts and braces, just to be sure type affair.

My long term girlfriend now wants to get back together and i dont want to tell her about this little slip up as it will upset her etc etc.  Shes been on the pil the whole time so a sudden reversion to condoms is undoubtedly going to make her suspicious.

My question to you is.  Can i assume that after 4 weeks if i get the all clear from the GUM clinic can i then resume having unprotected sex with my partner?  Does this situation i describe put me at a low risk?

Thanks for your time doc

Every answer is going to be the same here. We are US based and all follow the CDC, FDA and test manufacture guidelines. If you want an answer from a Dr, then pay to post in the Expert forum or call and talk with the GUM clinic. The answer in this forum will not change no matter who gives it.

3 months is when you can obtain a conclusive test based on the recommendations we use.

NHS say most people will test accurately in 4 weeks.  If im in the lower bracket of people likely to get it anyway and im symptomless, surely my chances of getting it are tiny?

Opinions?

We use the FDA and CDC guidelines based in the US. So we will always tell you 3 months is conclusive. You can speak to someone at the GUM Clinic and see if they will endorce the 4 week DUO test but this forum will not do that.
