Artery plaque

Does extremely high HDL actually lead to artery plaque?  My HDL at last test was 130 and has been going up for several years, and now I have plaque in a carotid.  I always thought the higher the better?  And, if not, shouldn't my doctor have warned me?

Thanks.

HDL is generally thought to be protective and the levels for routine testing of HDL is as follows: greater than 50 for women and greater than 40 for men.   Sometimes around 60 is considered an optimum and higher values are not beneficial though not bad either.
Very recent studies however seem to indicate that there might be a 'good' as well as a 'bad' HDL, where the 'bad' actually is disfunctional and does not do the work it is supposed to do. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2014/01/good_cholesterol_can_be_bad_fo.html.
