Batista Procedure

What is the current state of progress for ventricular remodeling as treatment for CHF? I saw a piece on this on PBS in early 1998, and at that time the procedure was very much experimental in the United States. Particularly, what qualifies a patientt as a candidate for this procedure. Is there an age limit (my father is 76)? Wat does the near future look like for this procedure?  Thanks very much.

Dear 135711,
The Batista procedure has largly been replaced by a new procedure called the Dor (pronounced like door) procedure.  This is less radical than the Batista in the amount of tissue that is removed and the preliminary results appear promising.  People who are candidates for this procdure are those with decreased pumping function of the heart, coronary artery disease and a large area of scar in the heart.  If your father would like to be considered for a Dor procedure he can make an appointment with Dr. Hammer or Dr. Mills here at the Cleveland Clinic.
