we observed the irregular hearts beats when he was sleeping..his body till stomach is shaking mildly and the head too.. :(
yeah thanx for the reply sir...i am more concerned that he is even smoking after the open heart surgery is done..daily 5 to 6 cig's..and he is also drinking too much cup's of tea..he is not listening...but the happy thing is he dont have any high or low B.P or diabetes...but still we are worried about the irregular heart beats and he is coughing(maybe bcoz of smoking) some times in a day...we are very scared that he may get Heart attack or brain hammarage..but he is more active after surgery..but still the dilation didnt get reduce and irregular heart beats making us worry about him..
Atrial Fibrillation is often associated with an enlarged atrium, usually the left atrium is the source of the problem.
I am almost a quarter century older than your father so my experience is for a heart of considerable more age.
I had a leaky Mitral valve from my 50s and likely undiagnosed before that. I began to suffer from AFib when in my early 50s, I had quit smoking 5 years+ before that and had taken on a "healthy heart" life style including running for cardiovascular health. I was treated to stop the AFib and it mostly worked. See my profile.
At age 67 I had open heart surgery because the leaky Mitral valve had resulted in unacceptable enlargement in my left Atrium. My MV was repaired and the surgeon said (even at my age, my words) my Atrium could (or did he say would?) shrink back toward normal size. Now 7 years later I can say the only good news I have is the MV repair is still working (I still have my own valve, just a ring was inserted in the opening), and my Atrium is no longer getting larger. The bad news is my Atrium is not shrinking back.
There is more detail in my profile.
My botton lines: Stop smoking, it can be done and I haven't smoked for over 25 years and think that is one contributor to the fact I am still alive. And, my experience is at an age older than your father's my Atrium did not shrink following valve repair. Atria Fibrillation is my guess, please it is only a guess, as to the source of your father's irregular heart beat.
I have lived with AFib for 7 years now, and at my age it only slightly limits my physical activity. of course I no longer run or even hike up steep hills but I get around fine and should exercise more.
Hope for improvement for all in 2014
hi..my father had an post asd closure and mvr...he underwent operation on april 5th 2013...he recently AGAIN as u suggested took 2d echo...it shows that RA and RV are still Dilated and TR+/MILD PAH and also MILD PR...and also aortic valve is calcified and AORTA size is 3.2cm..ESD=3.10cm,EDD=4.85cm,,EF=65%,PW=0.91cm,IVS=0.84cm..FS=36%.and also left artrium is 3.8cm..we are very scared he may get HEART attack...His age is 50years..plzzzzz say how is the present condition...and we see that there are irregular heart beats...i dunno why there are irregular heart beats..plzzzz answer my question :)

Heart failure is not likely in my opinion because the left ventricle is fine. His EF is high and easily coping with the demands of the body. The only thing you can do is have an echo every 3-6 months to see the current status. I think 3 months was probably a little bit optimistic. I would have said more like 6 months to a year.
when does dilution will reduce...?? i mean how much time it will take...?? is he now in serious condition...?? i am worrying that he may get heart failure...
There is nothing you can do except wait and be patient. It takes time.
he doesnt have any diabetes or any other low or high b.p now..but that MILD PAH and TRIVIAL PERICARDIAL EFFUSION and DILUTED RA and RV making me sick...doctor also said that dilution will take two or 3 months to get reduce..but it is already 4 months over now...i am feeling like dying..
nah...he has only low b.p before surgery.....he dont have diabetes or any other B.P...so what should we do now...? i am really frighetened bcoz he may get heart failure :'(..
His aorta looks pretty large? did he have high blood pressure prior to the surgery?
It isn't normal, but what you would expect from the causes he had. However, the cardiologist rightly feels that the dilation will reduce over time, and he has trivial pericardial effusion which is to be expected after major surgery. The shunt between the atria is looking great (closed) and so I would say his prognosis is pretty good.
latest 2D ECHO REPORT:
ESD=3.10 cm,EDD=4.8cm,EF=68%,PW=0.97 cm,IVS=0.84cm,FS=38%
AORTA:2.9cm,LEFT ARTRIUM:4.0cm, MITRAL FLOW:E=1.8M/SEC,A=1.4M/SEC
CONCLUSION: POST MVRR+,ASD SURGICAL CLOSURE
NORMALLY FUNCTIONING MITRAL PROSTHEISIS
NO RESIDUAL SHUNT
DILATED RA/RV
TR+/MILD PAH
GOOD LV FUNCTION
TRIVIAL PERICARDIAL EFFUSION
i have sent u the echo report...how are that values...is that fine....?
Just to add, because I'm sure some people will argue this point. I will never forget a time when I was in hospital, a cardiologist said to a patient "This is your body giving up because you mistreated it with smoking". The patient explained he had never smoked and the cardiologist could not give an explanation. He was normal weight, ate healthily, had a physically active job and yet he had heart disease. His cholesterol was also lower than average. Personally I think 'inherited genetically' is a cop out. How is artery disease increasing so rapidly across the planet? does this mean all our genes have gone bad?

The smoking is likely to affect blood pressure and his arteries more than anything, giving more risk for artery disease. I doubt if this will affect his recovery (5 a day) unless he has high blood pressure.
but the bad thing is he is smoking now...only 5 per day...he says he cannot stop smoking cig :'(...recent echo report full dissapointed us..
microvalve... mitral valve:bio pliable vlave insitu
Don't worry, with the hole between the left/right atria closed, the pressure will drop and the dilation will reduce over time. With his valves now also in good shape, this is a big bonus. What type of replacement mitral valve did he have? mechanical?
