Heart Palpitations

So, first question here....I've been having heart palpitations for the better part of 20 years, since 1996.  They have become more frequent as I've gotten older (41 now) but I still wonder if they are as benign as they were 20 years ago.  I might go 2 weeks without getting any and then all of a sudden I will get 10-15 in an hour (heart flutters) but I go through several bouts of my heart speeding up (beating out of my chest) but I chalk that up to being out of shape.  I've had EKG's, stress tests, Stress echo, halter monitor, etc and cardiologist has always come back with good news, all normal.  Does anyone else experience several days/weeks without any HP and then experience an onslaught of HP's.  As you know, if you have them, they are a bit scary.

About five years ago I was having rapid heartbeats off and on. My primary doctor heard them one day and sent me to a cardiologist. He listened to my heart and told me I had an occasional skip and not to worry about it because a lot of people do. About a year later my primary doctor heard them again and sent me back to that doctor. He asked me why I was back there and I told him my doctor didn't like the sound of my heart. He dismissed it, told me I had a skip and sent me home. shortly after that I had three TIA's (mini strokes.) I went to another cardiologist and was in full blown AFIB. If the 1st cardiologist would have put a 48 hour Holter Monitor on me, they may have found it sooner. I hope this helps.

Well, age itself is a risk factor for many diseases, so yeah, as time marches on... but you know that.  ;-)

However, if you have had fairly recent EKGs and all that other stuff, and if you live healthily (diet, exercise, weight, etc), you're probably still in 'benign' territory.  As you've probably read over and over again, ectopic beats in a normal heart are not associated with a shorter life.

As to flareups, I've experienced them for decades now--long periods of nothing, and then a sudden burst of PVCs. The cause of benign ectopics is still unknown, so we just have to learn to roll with changes like these.

That's what worries me, I'm 41 now and no longer the young, athletic 20 year old.  I did start taking a medication (steroid) for an inflammation in my sinuses on Friday, which is the exact day these most recent flareups started so I'm actually hoping it's the medication.  One of the side effects IS heart palpitations.  Other than that, I have good days and bad days....some days I can go up and down the stairs, cleaning the house, doing laundry, etc and other days I can barely walk up one flight of stairs......it's very annoying.
