LVADs

Are LVADs being implanted into CHF persons who are not eligible for heart transplant?  If so, what centers are practicing this procedure?  Who is eligible?  What are common risk factors?  A family member has CHF.  His physicians indicate that his arteries are strong but his heart is too weak to pump blood as needed.  He currently receives medication via IV 6 hours/day 7 days/week via a port which has had some level of success.  Thank you for your time.

The name of the study is called Rematch and participants are randomized to either LVAD or medical therapy.

Dear Susan,
Usually left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are implanted in persons waiting for a heart transplant.  This is considered a 'bridge to transplant'.  However in some individuals who do not qualify for transplant LVADs have been tried as an end therapy.  We are not currently implanting LVADs for this but I have heard that University of Michigan is exploring this area.  Best wishes.
