just a routine examination for medication for ADD and the pediatrician wouldn't perscribe anyting without us going to a heart specialist first -- my son complained that once he had a pain in his chest -- that was 2 years ago and it hasn't happened since
The heart specialist said he has a fluttery valve, but said not to worry because it closed all the way -- I think that's the important part -- that the valve closes so blood doesn't go backwards. Everything I read so far says it is not that uncommon and to just monitor it annually.
hi ginger,
are you still checking this thread? my daughter age 5 was also just diagnosed with this, and this makes me very very concerned. i am concerned that it will progress also.. how were you diagnosed? my pediatrician heard a murmer and sent us to the cardiologist..
It's the most common cause of mitral regurgitations. I wouldn't be concered about this. Many patients, probably close to 50%, don't progress, the other 50% ends up needing valve surgery at one point in their lives. I would make sure that you continue with yearly follow ups and echocardiograms.
