Mild Calification of the Aortic Valve

Hi -

I just had a normal echo that came back with a report of mild calcification of my aortic valve.  I am otherwise very healthy.  I excercise regularly.  Am 39 years old, 5'3 and weigh 125.  Should I be concerned about this and will eating better and exercise help this?  Thanks and scared.

Yes, you should be concerned.  Are you on cholesterol medication?  Lipitor studies have shown that Lipitor not only reduces cholesterol, but reduces cholesterol already in the arteries and maybe heart valves.  You may want to check into it.  The calcification can change from mild to moderate relatively fast, so you will want to watch it carefully.  Has your doctor spoke to you about echocardiograms every few months to monitor the calcification?  Definitely eating healthy helps.  Stay away from processed meats, red meats, adding extra salt to meals.  Eat plenty of vegetables, fruit, brown rice, salmon, nuts, whole grain.
