Pains in chest, doctors don't know, please help

About 6 months ago, I started having these sharp pains in my chest cavity but in different areas, not just in the heart area. Sometimes it will be by my upper side where my armpit is, sometimes in the middle of my chest, it just varies.  Once I went to the emergency room and the doctors did a chest x-ray, and an ECG and they told me my sternum was inflamed, but then the same doctor said that she really didn't know what was wrong.  I have continued to get these random pains and they are really bad at times. I am only 24 years old and don't think it's my heart as the symptoms are not those of a heart attack, but I need to know what you think. Any input would be appreciated, also I would like to know what kind of doctor to go for this type of problem. I am a smoker, a non-drinker, am very active and I do do Monster drinks (about 2 to 3 a day) and am wondering if that can have an affect.

When I wrote this question, I was writing it for my home healthcare worker. She is the one with this problem, but I wanted her to see in black and white that those energy drinks can be very dangerous if taken too often.

Can anyone elaborate on what they do?  She said that if that was the problem, she would either slow down on therm or stop.

Sharp pains are generally considered non-cardiac.  However, anything in excess is very hard on the body, and certainly the high caffeine hits of Monster drinks is going to affect some organs.
Smoking is going to affect every single organ in your body. I'd avoid both substances.
I was a poster boy for poor cardiac behavior.  I drank huge quanities of coffee for years, and smoked cigarettes and cigars plus some other stuff as a young man.  I was a commercial fisherman and needed the boosts to keep going, but eventually it will catch up with you.
