Mark my son developed stv as a 14 year old as well. His heart was racing after soccer training so I took him to the hospital on the way home. His pulse was 234 & they quickly got ice bags all over him before giving him injections to bring it down. He stayed in overnight & was told he may grow out of it, if he didn't they could prescribe medicine or even perform a small surgical procedure on him. So for the next year he would take ice water to soccer training in case he had another episode. This did occur once or twice so he just came from the field, had his iced water, all was good within in minutes so he went back on the field & finished training. Over the years he has had a few minor cases that calmed down without ice water. He is now 25 & hasn't mentioned having had it occur for a long time. As I said earlier, ice water fixed him straight away on the one or two occasions it reoccurred so hopefully you will have the same result.
ps, you may well grow out of svt's but it is a possibility you will be living with it for a while yet.take care!!!
hi mark i'm kym, i have svt and have had many serious attacks but hey i'm still here!!!
you can not die of svt. i have had many episodes that have put me in hospital and had 3 attacks in a row that i needed adenosine for (which is dreadful) but i had the cardiac ablation 4 months ago which has helped heaps and i now continue to take my meds, flecanide which also helps. kids are cruel, but i'm very very certain you def can't die, it might feel like you are whilst having an attack but don't worry, your very young threrfore your body can take the fast heart rate, although it is annoying and uncomfortable.
sounds like you could do with some meds to control your heart rhythm, your doctor or cardiologist can prescribe these and there is also a booklet they can give you to read about the condition. biggest tip i can give you is try not to panic, i know it's hard but panicing increases the heart rate further. good luck, n ignore your mates they are prob jealous of all the extra attention you get!!!!
School is hard but one day you will make a big success of your life and the people who make stupid comments will have some health issues of their own one day and will remember back to their teenaged self and feel ashamed.
If you have been diagnosed with SVT you must have seen a doctor so your questions should go to them. I don't believe it is life threatening but might need treatment later on, or not. It must be annoying for you but you will end up as a person that can empathise with others who have chronic health issues and will be a better person for this.
School is full of jerks and my experience has been that the people who were cool and popular didn't always stay that way after school. It was the geeks and nerds who have had great careers while some of the sporty guys are working in stores. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just saying school is a dog eat dog place that doesn't resemble the real world often.
Try to ignore them if you can and perhaps talk to a teacher about trying to get more privacy around your health. Everyone needn't know why you've gone home or whatever, that's your business not theirs.
Be kind to yourself.
I'm told that SVT is not dangerous and can be controlled with medicine. But you have to see a doctor to find out what medicine is for you. Anyway, how do you know it's SVT if you haven't seen a doctor? Don't get upset with all those remarks. Bet them a dollar you'll come to school tomorrow. That way you'll get enough money to see a cardiologist.
