Thickening heart muscle?

Hi,

I recently had ECG & Echo showing "prominent S wave" and thickened septum (1.4cm) and lef ventricular posterior wall (1.4cm). I have no hypertension (or history of), in fact I have relative bradycardia (typical 47-50bpm, blood presure ~120/80). I am not an athlete and used to practice sports moderately (but almost  none in the last 2 years). I also had an Echo done few years ago - interestingly - this echo was showing a septum of 1.2cm so I am a bit worried that the muscle appears to have thickened since (?)

Could you please advise what this could all mean?

Many thanks

seek cardio evaluation.  I also have s wave ekg markers.  I have an enlarged left atrium.  usually the septum and atrium go hand in hand.  since yours is not, I would not worry, but seek cardio advice soon.

It would be interesting to know your left ventricular inner diastolic diameter. Hearts do not have a standard size. Some hearts are small, some are large (and of course do have thicker walls). If the chamber dimensions also are large, 1,4 cm isn't so bad and could be normal.

Have you not seen a cardiologist to discuss the results yet? From the little information you have posted I can't really see a problem? Your septal and left ventricle wall thicknesses have a perfect comparison 1.4-1.4 so I would believe this to show your fitness. I would expect there to be a prominent S wave in such circumstances. But that's going by the small amount of information to go on. It looks as though your sporting activities involved lots of leg work, i.e running because the septal/lv thickening is more associated with endurance. The thickness you quote is actually small compared to athletes. As I keep saying, this is all I can say regarding the small amount of info supplied and your cardiologist needs to discuss the results with you. You mention nothing about your valves for example. You could even be suspect for HCM but without further info, I can't possibly comment any further.
