What Murmur is This?

I ask because it's mine...always had it, always wondered what it was. I had somebody tell me it was MVP one time, but I've never really heard the click. The biggest feature to me seems to be that I've always had kinda distant heart sounds with this holosystolic murmur and have never been able to really hear my S1. I ask now because I've had persistent odd parasthesias down the left arm for the past 5ish years...could be related to multiple rotator cuff injuries in the shoulder...or I guess MVP, but I'm not sure. I'm 29. Healthy. No PMH.

From wikipedia the distinction for a MVP is in contrast to most other heart murmurs..." the murmur of mitral valve prolapse is accentuated by standing and valsalva maneuver (earlier systolic click and longer murmur) and diminished with squatting (later systolic click and shorter murmur). The only other heart murmur that follows this pattern is the murmur of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A MVP murmur can be distinguished from a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy murmur by 1) the presence of a mid-systolic click which is virtually diagnostic of MVP, and 2) the fact that hand grip maneuver intensifies the murmur of MVP[citation needed] and diminishes the murmur of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The hand grip maneuver also diminishes the duration of the murmur and delays the timing of the mid-systolic click.[14]

Hope this helps and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond.  take care,

Ken
