If it is an ascending aortic aneurysm (particularly in the aortic root), consider ARB therapy for him - it could reduce or eliminate the need for surgery. Click on my screenname and read my old posts about this topic.
Also, there are different kinds of aortic aneurysms. Did the doctor say if it's an abdominal aortic aneurysm (most common type), or a thoracic aortic aneurysm? (The Mayo Clinic site has a lot of good information about aortic aneurysms.)
The usual procedure is for the doctor to monitor if there is any fast growth. The 4.0cm is the size that is considered an aneursym and if grown to 5.0cm fast there begins to be some concern for possible rupture.
Your husbands 4.0cm may not be that abnormal if at all. Normal sizes vary depending on size, gender, age, etc. . Mitral valve prolapse is not that incommon and usually doesn't progress. If it is the aorta valve that good be problematic. Palpitations are not that uncommon either. Need more information such as medical history, tests completed, genetics, etc.
