The elevated pressures in the lungs may be caused by high filling heart pressures related to thich heart muscle, mitral valve regurgitation where the valve leaks blood back into the lungs and finally, potential coronary artery disease which if he had a catheterization he probably does not.  The lungs don't tolerate high pressures for a long time and may suffer deletorious changes.  As long as his  pulmonary pressure is only mildly elevated and was only recently diagnosed and clinically he feels relatively ok, he will be fine.  However, long term, he may need surgical intervention to fix the obstruction and maybe even the mitral valve.
