Drug eluding stents (DES) are more susceptible to restenosis than bare metal stent up to about a year or more. Studies have shown and the consensus is to medicate with Plavix and aspirin for that time period. Both medications are anti-platelete agents but have different mechanisms to prevent clotting and the doctor has no fault.
Another question! my grandpa had thrombosis 2 days after he got a stent in. You said somthing about getting it after a year. Do you think its because the doctors did a bad job? Or what might of caused this?
Thhhhhhaaankkkkkksss again!!! from Juliaaaaa
lol thanks so much. I know that there are no doctors here I just felt like saying that. Haha.
For some inight on the subject of stent implants. The greatest risk with stent implantation is the formation of clots (thrombosis) within the stent. Aspirin and Plavix (oral anti-clotting medications) are usually given after stent placement to minimize this risk, which has been reported to occur in about 1–1.5% of patients undergoing stent implants. There has been no evidence of long-term complications from stent implantation, according to the American Heart Association.
QUOTE: "The doctor said if they had put the stent in the very first time he felt weird, his thrombosis wouldn't be that bad". I'm not clear on the meaning of that statement! I assume the implants were a drug eluding stents (DES) rather than the bare metal. Researchers disagree on what might cause blood clots a year or more after a stent is implanted. Some speculate that the drug that coats the stent, designed to prevent scarring inside the artery, also impedes the normal healing that helps blood flow smoothly. Others say that the synthetic coating that binds the drug to the metal may trigger irritation and clotting. There is some evidence blood vessels have a hard time healing around drug-eluding stents so Plavix is prescribed with aspirin for up to a year or more.
.
Also the skill in placing the stent matters: If insertion injures the lining of the artery, blood clots are more likely to form. There are no doctors on this forum...there is a professional forum, and the information given may help you understand and question a doctor further.
