Had a genealogy study recommended - what is it?

I was wondering what anyone could tell me about a genealogy study. Familion has just recommended that to us becuase he gene mutation they found hasn't been tied to any known defect. My son and I both tested positive for a mutation of SCN5A Tyr 87 Cys. after Mayo Clinic noticed that my ekg showed a short qt interval (although not extremely short) and then they seen that his was also, just not quite as short as mine. We were there because he had suffered SCD in 2008, possibly from Super Ventricular Tachycardia. He also has bradycardia, low blood pressure and has had A-fib since getting his ICD. I have severe bradycardia, low blood pressure and have had one ekg that showed a-fib. My brother passed in 1996 from an unknown arrythmia. Pretty sure this comes from my mother's side of the family because of her bradycardia and low blood pressure and some unexpected deaths in the family.

Does insurance cover these? Are they really expensive? What do they do?

Genealogists document and construct family genealogies, lineages and relationships usually using available historical records. They study the genetics and disease within the family and the cause of death of all past members of your family.

Types of Genetic Inheritance:

Traits, including genetic disorders, can be inherited in a number of patterns according to what chromosome the trait is encoded on, and whether the trait is dominant or recessive.

Single Gene Disorders

Autosomal Dominant: one copy of a defective gene is needed (examples: polycystic kidney disease, Huntington’s Disease)

Autosomal Recessive: two copies of a defective gene are needed (examples: Wilson’s Disease, Cystic Fibrosis)

X-linked Recessive: only males exhibit the trait because it is encoded on the X chromosome; females can be carriers.

As for the cost and whether or not insurance covers it, this I do not have the answer to. Hope my explanation isn't too confusing...:)
