Heavy breathing and fast heart rate while sleeping

I have a question about something that happened to me last night and it was not the first time but last night for some reason freaked me out. I was having a dream that I was getting into a fight and to find myself being woken up by my wife asking me if I was ok because I was breathing very deep and loud and when I woke up my heart was racing very fast and hard, what do you think happened to me? I know I felt adrenaline because of my dream but is that normal? I have not gone to the doctor yet but planning on going and would just want to see if anyone else has experienced this before? The worse part about it is that it took me about 5 minuets for me to catch up with my normal breathing, I felt like I was out of breath.

Sounds like night terror to me.  Having an elevated heart rate and increased breathing rate when your body is in "fight or flight" mode is completely normal.  It doesn't sound as though your symptoms are caused by an arhythmia, rather that your sleep cycle/dreaming induced an adrenaline reaction.

I would go to the doctor.  He/she will likely order a CAT scan to rule out any abnormal neurological component.  After that, he/she may suggest a sleep study.  Barring any abnormal results, you will likely be advised to seek counseling or to take medication that will help alleviate whatever anxiety inducing emotions you carry with you into your sleep cycle.

Good luck.
