Is it normal for your heart rate to be wonky after waking up?

After sleeping, particularly after REM sleep from what I can tell, my heart rates pretty high (in the 120 to 140) range when I stand up and walk around. Then, when I sit back down, it jumps back down to 70, but if I slightly nudge my body or something, it jumps up to 110. I assume this happens because I was in a sedentary position for so long and my body's re-adjusting? This typically goes away after 30 minutes of doing stuff.

I have had an ECG done before and the cardiologist said everything looked fine. Should I still be worried?

You should obtain a blood pressure after you stand.

If available a tilt table test is indicated.

These are symptoms that are consistent with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.. Which is technically a neurological thing. The condition is defined by a rise in heart rate in excess of 30 bpm without a clinically significant (say.. Greater then 20 systolic) loss in blood pressure, when going from laying down to standing positions.

Its associated with dehydration. Management involves increasing fluid intake (of course), severe cases may require dietary changes, and in an even smaller percentage of the small percent that need to fix their diet.. Theres meds.

Dysautonomia is the forum that deals with this condition on medhelp, but few people seem to actually go there to answer questions.

An appointment can be made with your primary care doc.. A neruologist or a cardiologist any of whom can screen for it.
