Vibrating/shiver in the left part of the chest

For the past few days I have randomly got what feels like a "shiver" in the left part of my chest, around my heart. It last a few seconds, and happens about 25 times a day total, that I notice. I feel totally fine other than that. I'm 26 and am generally healthy and happy. But this vibrating neart my heart is kind of scary. Any ideas what it could be.

When you say "shiver" is it more like fluttering or rapid beats?

Does the vibration/shiver feel at all like a muscle or skin activity?  Vibration/shiver is a very rapid change in my mind, maybe 5 or more times per second. Is it that fast?

I started having a vibration feeling on the left side of my chest just under my breast.
It happens several times a day.  I especially feel it at night.  Several people have also commented about this.  Go up to the search box and type in chest vibration.  That is what I did.  I also went to the doctor.  He thinks it is benign.  I was worried it was atrial flutter but he is not concerned.  I've decided it is either a muscle spasm or my intestines just working overtime.  Not sure but it really bothered me for a while.  I'm getting used to it now.  I'm sure you are fine.

It feels more like a flutter, I guess. Like when you're very cold and your body automatically shakes quickly. It feels more like a muscle thing I would guess because it feels like it's inside my body as opposed to something more toward the surface like the skin.

Hello...

You should probabaly make an appt. to see your Dr. to have this evaluated. Many times they turn out to be benign ectopics like PAC's or PVC's.  I am only guessing. Without documentation or test results, that's about all I can say. Have you had any heart related testing in the past, like an EKG or an Echocardiogram?

I hope that you are able to get the answers you're looking for. :)

Hi All,
I was diagnosed with mild Pericardial Effusion back in 2005. Doctors suspected it to be TB and put me on a 6 mon course. The decease is gone but I still get the shivers now and then just like you described. In my case it only happens when I am a bit weak or having mild to moderate cold. Added to it I feel a sense of breathlessness.  The worst part is it only happens when I am asleep and it wakes me up in the middle of the night. Its a worst feeling of not being able to sleep even when u like to.

This happens only when I am over stressed or weak. Everytime this happens I begin to suspect that I am not completely cured. But once I start feeling better I forget abt it and it wouldn't come back for another few months.

Is it possible that this might not even be TB. I have a feeling that I am suffering from some sort of mild asthma. Airway constriction. Can any one give any suggestions as to what I should do to permanently get rid of this.
Thank you
np

I'm a 57 year old male with a history of hypertension on low dose atenolol (a beta blocker) and slightly elevated cholesterol. I have the same thing.

It would wake me from a sound sleep. I would wake shivering and sometimes uncontrollably shaking with a shortness of breath (like I was freezing). It would take a minute or so before the shaking would subside and the breathing would return to normal as I began to feel normal and warmer.

I noticed that these episodes only happened when it was a bit cool or cold in the bedroom (I like a cooler room for sleeping) AND an arm was out of the cover. That arm would be cold to the touch. It never happened with both arms under the covers. I usually sleep on my side. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

It happened on and off (maybe once a month or less) for a few years during the colder months. Lately, I've been having an occasional vibration (almost like a purring or a cell phone on vibrate) radiating from under my lower sternum at the xiphoid process. The vibration mimmics the shiver frequency (about 200-300 beats per minute) that I was experiencing except there is no chill, shiver or change in breathing. I can breathe deeply with no unusal sensation. It only happens (or is noticed) when I'm in bed. It can be a significant vibration and I can make it diminish by slowly exhaling and calming myself. It will sometimes stop completely if I can forget about the phenomenon. As soon as I notice that it stopped, it comes back. An MD checked with an EKG while it was happening and said the heart is fine. He couldn't feel or hear the vibration although sometimes it is quite faint. It apparently is a muscle spasm in the diaphram for some unknown reason. There are some threads on the medhelp site about this. I now think the shivering and the vibrations are related. I believe if I can fix the chest vibration problem, the shivering episodes will also end.

Hope this helps. Has anything helped your problem?

I start to feel the same thing, it is really anoying. I had heart assessment several months ago, nothing came up. I do not smoke or drink at all, I study health and never came accross anything like this condition. I gues I need to go to the doctor and really ask for another heart test. I hope that all of you feel well, and if you come up with something, please share it so we all get to knwo what actually this problem is.
thanks

I have the same condition, i.e., it happens in bed when its chilly and one of my arms is outside the covers!  It also sometimes happens when I'm outside and get chilly.  The air temperature can be in the 50s or probably even 60s.  I can make it stop if I clutch my chest closely -- and get under the bed covers or outside of the cold.  I told my doctor about it, and have an EKG scheduled for this week.
