can someone tell me if this is palpatations

I  was just wondering if what i have is palpatations. I went to the emergency room because for a couple of days my heart was doing flip flops it would beat normal and then BAM it would beat really hard and there was like a pause. The Dr. really didnt tell me anything, stay off stimulants but i dont take or drink any kind of stimulants. he put me on metoprolol, and ativan, I had an EKG,Heart and lung xray and blood, urine. all come back fine, i have normal blood pressure. im so confused because it can just happen for no reason, when im relaxed it happens when im stressed it happens, ugh sometimes it dosent happen for weeks and then it will start an feel like it will never stop. i also get the fluttering unstable feeling in the chest. it really stresses me out, oh and my mother has mitral valve prolapse. Some times just standing up causes my heart to pound. Has anyone one here been through this? It is really affecting my life.

Hi
I'd second what the others have said. I also started off a bit like you, pounding in chest, with no real reason. My mum also has a valve problem, not sure which one though. I went to hospital, they have done whole series of tests and my heart structure is fine but I have lots of different arrhythmias going on and I'm having ablation at end of this month. Although I hope this will sort it I'm scared stiff...
Hope you get things sorted, let us know how you get on

You mentioned that your mother has Mitral Valve Prolapse. As the others stated you need to get an Echocardiogram done and have your valves checked also.

I have Mitral Valve Prolapse that was found when I was 16 years old. I still have it at 44 but it is very mild with little regurgitation.

I do have all the symptoms you describe from this condition however. The symptoms have gotten more intense and frequent as I got older also. Especially the feeling of anxiety which is common with MVP.

See a cardiologist as suggested and get an Echo. Better safe than sorry.

Let us know how you make out.

Rita is right - you should see a cardiologist, have your heart checked to make sure the valves and heart walls are normal. You may have to wear a heart monitor for a couple of days so they can "catch" the arrhythmia when it happens. Then they'll see what's causing your heart to race and pound. If your heart is quiet when they do the EKG in the office, then they're not going to see anything but normal. Not knowing just makes things more frightening. Let us know what you find out.

Yes, most of us have this very same feeling.  What you're describing sounds like PVCs, or PACs, etc.  All you need to do is go to a cardiologist to make sure your heart is structurally normal and visit us when you feel terrible.  But try to calm down.  And I know that is NOT easy.
