My Mom hbsag neg and developed antibodies ! First in Family !

Hi All,

Some of you know me and it has been quite a while since I posted anything. A little history about my family for those that don't know. I am born to a mother with hepatitis b, with 2 uncles with hepatitis b , my grandmother died of liver failure one of my uncles had cancer twice now and my other uncle has liver cirrhosis. We are all chinese and have had hepatitis b in our family for god knows how long , but my grandmother died from it and thats when we found out. We are all born chronic carriers and all have become active carriers, not one person in our family is inactive. I was an inactive carrier  till age 37 and I became active then. I am currently on entecavir , my mother and uncle was on entecavir and the one with cirrhosis on viread (tenofovir) . I tested my genotype and mutations and i am hepatitis b genotype c with double mutations core and basal core, long story short strong mutations for cancer in our family genes. Our ages are me 40 , mom 70, uncles 68 and 66 , age 66 with cancer.

As all active carriers we take blood test routinely some take it every 6 months with ultrasound and some every 3. Once a year we check hbsag reactive or non reactive and hsbab reactive or non reactive. My mom who test every year got a big surprise today. She is non reactive on hbsag and reactive to hbsab ! It seems she might have cleared but were not sure till we take the qty test on hbsab ! Still its great news for our family cause she will be the first !

I just wanted to share this great news for our family to let everyone know there is hope and keep on fighting. Coming from a family where this disease had consumed our family I am happy she is able to escape. I wish everyone the best and good luck  and GOD Bless !

This is great news! I am happy to hear this and your family must be really excited. From what I recall, Genotype C & A are the two likeliest to clear (unfortunate for me, my Genotype D is difficult).

Before you get bombarded with messages and questions, I'll ask them:

-How long was your mother on entecavir before this news?

-Did she ever do any interferon treatment?

-Did she have any other daily regiments other than the medication?

-Is there anything else specific she took by any chance that you think may have contributed to the clearance?

-Take the test 3 times over the course of the next few months just to be sure and monitor

-It's likely she should stay on the medication for a year, even if she did clear.

Hopefully those should be all questions we typically see!

hi luckyman ,

thanks for the support and i dont doubt any of us cant clear because she cleared. so here lets go to the questions

-How long was your mother on entecavir before this news?

my mother started entecavir 2005 , one of the pioneer patients for this drug. she was on lam before  and also on adf prior.

-Did she ever do any interferon treatment?

she has never done any interferon treatment

-Did she have any other daily regiments other than the medication?

she walks every day for exercise about 45 mins but has been doing that for the last 35 years. other than that shes not the healthiest eater. she still goes out with her friends and eats chinese pastries thats loaded with sugar and white flour. i notice the last few years she has started to eat less and has lost a good amount of weight.

-Is there anything else specific she took by any chance that you think may have contributed to the clearance?

she was diagnosed with thyroid disease about 2 years ago and was on medication. i keep thinking this has something to do with it. she had a lot of itching of the skin and really bad asthma and the doctors took 6 months trying to figure it out before checking her thyroid. it came up she has a thyroid thats overactive and went on medication. after starting the medication 2 year ago , she cleared. i am not saying the thyroid meds helped, but thats the only thing she did different.

she is also super obsessive when it comes to medication and other things she hears from others. for example, she use to go to the chinese doctor because she thought it could help with her hep b and she was religious about it for close to 5 years. after it had no help she finally gave it around 2013. also she heard ginger was really good for you , so she consumed a lot of it and broke out in rashes and i had to tell her stop being overly obsessed with 1 thing. have a balance. anyways she started thyroid meds cut seafood because of her thyroid and ate mainly just been , chicken pork and vegetables.

also every morning she puts lemon in her water and drinks green tea throughout the day. basically she only drinks hot / warm water and green tea. she never drinks cold things because chinese people think cold water hurts your system. she also takes a probiotic , vitamin d3 (1000 iu only per day) high blood pressure pills and entecavir.

If you have any other questions dont be hesitant to ask.

good luck all keep the fight on !
Thank you for sharing all answers! This gives us all hope! I suspect the Vitamin D3 (even if it was low) and the green tea and lemon water played a factor in this.
