Dont Ask a PCP a Question About HCV

As some of  you know I have been in the hospital since Monday. Long boring story. Anyways one of the problems was my system crashed my liver enzymes went up into the 100s, I was throwing up blood, my electolytes went nuts etc etc.

Anyhow this morning i asked again, the PCP on my case why did my LFTs go up so high I have been SVR for over 4 years and they have never been higher than 20/25.  She told me that my hepatitis came back and it was active. I said no I had my blood work last month and they were right in the 20s I have been cured over 4 years and UND for 6.  She had the nerve to tell me that our hep comes and goes that we are never cuired because it is always acrtive and so our enzymes will always go up and down.

Now, this was at 6am.  I haven't eaten in 5 days. They wake you up every two hours. I lost it I just said Doctor you obviously dont know what you are talking about so please leave my room because I'm not about to argue with you and your old out of date education.

She snarked at me in her Indian accent which I can't copy here and was like humph.................good this is why we have such bad reputations.  Why would we bother to treat if we had lfts in the 100s all the times out of the blue our hep would just come and go like she told me.

Oh I am MAD. I am outta here discharging now.

Sorry I had to vent at the ignorance. I'm just so tired and so MAD.

Amazing that the doctor didn't do any reading on HCV when she learned she was treating you...

I'm so sorry to hear that you are/were in the hospital, I truly hope you feel better soon.

Unfortunately....sounds like most PCP"s  ...most have no clue about HCV  and sadly...don"t seem to care if they do.

Hope you get better soon Deb....

a friend of mine is critical care nurse and was the head nurse of an ICU in NY.  it is her opinion that some of the foreign trained doctors she encountered had sketchy training.

Hi Deb.

I am very sorry to hear about what happened with your health and then to have some *&%^ idiot spouting ignorance about hepatitis C would send any one over the edge. It is tough enough being ill and being in a hospital without some ignorant person telling us about some nonsense they believe.

I would report her to whoever is in charge. It can't hurt. She shouldn't be going around spreading false medical information to others. If it is just ignorance, will then maybe she'll get a wake up call and realize she is miss informed and needs to learn more about HCV. It would help her patients with hep C in the future also.

I hope you saw some real doctors and got a diagnoses and treatment.

Take care. I hope you are alright.

Sorry you have been ill, but glad you are getting out. I hate hospitals and it makes it worse when you have to deal with ignorance. Be well and go home and rest!

Gosh, Deb, that's quite a week you've been thru! Please do follow-up somewhere, especially if these sx haven't resolved. Vomiting blood and wonky electrolytes are pretty serious stuff.

Hope to see a happier (and healthier) post from you soon!  Pam

aye yi yi!  nothing short of horrendous!  i think an appt with their ombudsman, or at least a call to ??? at the hospital admin is in order.

beyond all of that, i'm glad you're on the mend, and are getting the h*ll outta there!!!

my primary is kinda in the same boat with nygirls, telling me I am very sick, looking at me like I'm a drunk, "how did you get this" she asked. Well if I knew I wouldnt have been there! Then saying well if you have hcv maybe I should test you for hiv. Some md's just really think they are above us maybe they are as far as education but..........what about the old saying "think before you speak" think about peoples feelings after being told they have this aweful thing going on in there body. OMG, just hope my "new" md on friday is my knight in shining armour. Please!!!! Fingers are crossed. Hope nygirl is ok and they find out WHY you had all that stuff happen. I just like closure I guess. Good luck!!!!!!!

sorry your not well, I sure hope they can get you fixed up and on your way.  Did they ever figure out why this really happened?  I find it baffling that doctors still dont have much knowledge of HCV.  Astounding really!

I am in healthcare and I have suffered the same devastating misinformation from other healthcare providers.  So sorry you had this awful experience, and really hope you're feeling better soon.

I didn't know you were having such a bad week. I am so sorry to hear that. That PCP is pathetic. Please feel better soon. We are routing for you!

BTW, it is very possible that your enzymes went up because of an infection in your GI tract. The blood from your intestines makes its first pass through the liver and an infection there can cause elevated enzymes as well as vomiting and diarrhea.

Deb,  I am so sorry.  This is the first I've heard about this, that you've been sick and in the hospital!! I am SO-SO sorry!  I just got my computer back up and working like a normal computer without bombing out,...yesterday.  Unfortunately, while on it yesterday, I didn't see anything about your being sick.  I'm so sorry my friend.  I hope you get well soon!

Deb, I haven't been here long, but so sorry you had a hospital stay and received such poor advice and care.  What a terrible combination.

I really enjoy your posts and your positive attitude.  Hope you stay UND and they figure out what's happening with you quickly.  You truely deserve it.

Best wishes.......
