Hepatitis C - Walnuts / Weight

My first question is, are Walnuts generally safe to eat? I know that they are supposed to be good for the Liver, but could they be toxic in any way? I store them in an air-tight container and so on....

Question two:  I have lost quite a big of weight since I've been diagnosed, and want to gain weight before starting treatment. I have a good appetite, but don't seem to be able to put any weight on. Do you have any recommendations?

Walnuts are safe to eat as long as you're not allergic to them. They're high in (good) fat.

I find walnuts easily go rancid. I source my supply, buy them in bulk and keep the walnuts in the freezer, except for a jarful or so, which I keep in the fridge.

The one problem with them is that when they're good, I can't stop eating them.

I'm not sure why you're associating your weight loss with HCV. Did your doctor say there's a connection? I would think unexplained weight loss is more likely from a different underlying condition. Have you checked your thyroid? Are you burning more calories than you're eating?

I started tx thin also, lost 10 lbs but within the last month have gained several pounds back.  Peanut butter and banana sandwiches rock!
Ny is spot on about having a better chance of successfully treating if you have a low BMI and are not over weight.  There is well established data to support this and the leading hepatologist support low BMI before treatment as well.  Most people lose weight on tx, but if it becomes extreme liquid supplements such as Ensure, Boost, Resource and Sustacal can help but hopefully you won't need those.
Increase your food intake if you need to gain a little weight.  In order to lose weight successfully you have to eat less and burn more calories.  Reverse that and you should gain a little weight.
BTW, walnuts are wonderful and eat them all the time.

If you are allergic to nuts then they would be dangerous but other than that I don't have any idea why you would be worried about them in particular?

You have a better chance of treating sucessfully if you are under weight versus over weight so I don't know why you would want to gain weight - I started tx extremely thin lost weight then gainned back all of it plus more. Try some protein shakes or something that might help.

PS Please only post the question one time.......some one will eventually respond but most of us work all day and can't get to the posts immediately or we'll get fired!

Good luck.
