How long do Hepatitis C tests take to come back?

I was tested yesterday at my local lab and my doctors office only calls when a result is positive so I was wondering out people on this sight how fast did they receive a possitive and/or negative result.

The antibody test is done first to see if you have any antibodies to hep c. You should wait 12 weeks post an exposure for enough antibodies to develop to testable levels.

The HCV RNA test is done if there is a positive antibody test to confirm if you are currently infected or you could be positive from a prior exposure. About 25% of people will beat the hep c virus without treatment. For those people they will test positive for antibodies to the hep c virus but will test negative for the virus itself on the HCV RNA test.

Did you have a possible blood to blood contact with a person who has hep c? For example did you share IV drug needles with someone infected with hepatitis C?

If you are asking about the Hepatitis C antibody test your results usually take about 3 days. If you are asking about the HCV RNA by PCR test which looks for the actual virus in your blood stream that test takes about 10 days to come back.

Or you could simply call your doctors office and ask.
