I'm going to school and was humiliated. Is this legal?

At school in a CPR class, where universal precautions are preached and practiced by students and faculty alike. I was very humiliated. When I walked into the class I was automatically told by the instructor, in front of all students, "You have your own dummy and for no reason at all are you going to be messing with anyone elses right?" I was confused at first not realizing just who she was talking to. I answered her politely with a smile, not wanting to draw any unnecessary attn. After being given the dummy, she then told her asst. to put a sticker on mine. there were only about 15 of us and each group had thier own as well as I along with my own table in the back. My question is being medical professionals/Instructors, before letting out the students at the end of the class. They took My dummy in front of these students and placed it in a biohazard bag. Questions began cirrculating in regards to what type of "ish" did I have. Where my rights for confidentiality and privacy violated? I thought of HIPPA and professionalism. What do you think?

Trish pretty much covered what I was going to say. What she did is not illegal but unprofessional. You could file a complaint.
I’m not trying to put the blame on you but your rights for confidentiality and privacy were not violated. You volunteered this information to someone that is not your Dr. and even if the Instructor is bound by Confidentiality, she never told the class, you have HCV.
If it were me, I would demand a meeting with the Instructor and her Supervisor. I would advise you to educate yourself (HCV) and be “Fully Loaded for Bear” because more than likely they will try to feed you some BS just to shut you up.

"Ask" your instructor...not "As"

Good grief...your instructed needs to be educated on how not to be an a**hole.  Everything is wrong with this scenario.  As your instructor if he/she has every heard of HIPAA and then let him/her stew about it.

I agree with the above statements. You may want to print up some info about how HCV is spread, along with some info about how herpse simplex is spread... if someone gets herpes simplex they will have it for life... and unless you bleed into somebody's blood stream, you can't give HCV to them.

I think HIPPA is an issue too.

She shouldn't need to single you out - they should be practicing safe precautions across the board, even to not pass on casual colds, etc.  If she needs to single you out like that, then perhaps you need to turn that around and tell them that you have concerns if universal precautions are in place if she has to give you your own dummy and put an X on it.  You can ask them what about anyone in the class who might have a communicable disease that they themselves don't know about?  And if they ARE using universal precautions, why would you need to be singled out like that?

That question is fair.  She's either being unprofessional, she's not well informed…or they aren't following safe practices.  Might as well find out which.

I have taken the CPR and AED classes and every time they give us plastic to put over the dummy when we breathe into it. I'm not sure how a random teacher would know your status but the dummy sure wouldn't. It's not an STD you know and you dont catch it from saliva either. Please..........
