Inferon shots

My mother has Hepatitis C and she now has Chorosis of the liver from it. today she called me and told me that doctors said she can begin Inferon Shots, my questions is what are the side effects from these shots and can she die from them? My mother is only 40 and she has had Hepatitis C for 20 years and Chorosis for a little over a year now.

NO, your mom will not die from the medication.. Don't you worry about that one bit. She might feel like poo poo and be moody and snap at ya, but that is where you come in with educating yourself so you can be prepared and aware of how she is feeling and to not take things personally if she snaps at you. I am on shot 4 of interferon and i have had no side effects what so ever, so it does treat people differently. i have not missed work and i have continued to live my life just as normal as can be. Just hang in there and be there for her and be very patient. I know that is hard for a kid... how old are you anyways, to be so smart to get on here like you have to get info. She is very lucky to have such a child as yourself. You should be proud.

For me, the shots cause flu like symptoms (low grade fever, chills, joint pain).  My hair is also shedding.  It varies from week to week.  Some people have no problems at all.

The interferon will slow your moms liver damage.  She will need you to help her out probably.

Here's a web site that you and mom can find a lot of good information about cirrhosis, the treatment medicines and other important stuff   http://janis7hepc.com/. It would be a good idea to read some of it as she gets ready to start the treatment.  You can also bring her to your computer to ask questions of the people here. Most people here have hepatitis c, lots are going through the treatment and some have cirrhosis.  I have cirrhosis, I'm 55, quite handsome and feel good.

In a thread below you said.....It takes a strong, self-aware person to recognize and ask for help.

So your either calling me weak, or to late. Cause i've ask and they say sorry to late. Or just shake their head and walk away.

hi there, good to see you care about your mother. Im 48 and have had cirrhosis a couple years now. Doing tx. Your liver is one tough organ. Lets hope these current drugs work. But there is also better drugs on the way if all things work out. So put the ole shovel away. I agree with what others have said about her treating so no need to repeat it. Like my hepo told me i'd be around for some time driving people crazy. And thats excactly what i plan on doing. Heres hoping the best for you, your mother, And that new baby. Take care now ya here

Sweet talk is what i do to you.:) Bullsh*t is something you do not want to step in, most people don't like it on their carpet plus the smell follows you around.

Time to mow?

since she is not on treatment(tx), the sores could be from many other things, she needs for the dr to rule out possible causes. Make sure she gets tested for cryoglobulinemia prior to treating.

End stage liver disease is worse than the tx, worry about the former more than about the meds, but make sure she is well monitored for adverse events by both her PCP and her hepatologist once she is on tx.
good luck, and send her over here for support.

Well I told her today about this web site and she isnt very into computers (she doesnt know anything about them..lol)Plus I need this site for me to deal with this, I cry a lot and I worry!!! But she had advanced chorisis (she said that today, i didnt know this) so i dont know and she does scratch a lot so that may be why she has sores. they arent infected because I look at them often to check her... she does eat very well she never is hungry! She told me today that she has something to talk to me about, so tomorrow I am going to visit her and make her dinner and listen to what her and my stepfather have to tell me, I think it may be bad news because the only other time we had to have a talk like this she told me that she had Hep C. So forgive me for being super nervous! And I love you all for the support and feedback!

Zoey,

don't worry too much! Treatment is pretty straight forward and there is a good chance it will help your mother. The side effects can be a pain but for most people here not insermountable. Also effects everyone a little different. My advice is that you get your mother to come to this site and start posting her own questions and concerns because at the end of the day she is the one who has to go through this.

So please encourage her to start posting away there are a lot of supportive people here who are either going through or have gone through almost everything this treatment can throw at us.

I live in California, and we have County Heath facilities that you can go to , and practically get the same care as you would anywhere else with insurance.
There is also Healthy Families Medical in California and they go according to your income, which in some cases there is no out of pocket cost.

P.S. I have Hep C-2 will be starting treatment with interferon and rib. in 2 weeks.
