New York City and Hep

There was a MAJOR (page 2) article in the NY Post (ok a mostly trashy paper but WIDELY read) this weekend about Hep and how absolutely inconceivably on the rise it is in NYC.

Of course, it did as always make it appear that "junkies and people with multiple partners" were the only ones who could have it (yeah hard to believe since you don't even get this disease sexually!) but - they said it will soon overtake HIV in numbers and is a worldwide pandemic that NEEDS to be addressed.

That is the SECOND time in under a week I've read that statistic.

At least THAT was good.  I just wish some reporter would get the FACTS STRAIGHT about the ways to get this disease so that more people would be tested.

Still - they are starting to get the word out there and maybe that gives hope.

Sorry my friend.

I worked for 10 years on DOD contracts requiring a Top Secret clearence) and am married to someone who had 30 years working for the USDA until they cut her loose for having health problems.

So you want to talk about ignorance about how government functions, I DON'T THINK SO PAL!  You may want to get your facts straight before you go around pointing fingers, labeling, and insulting others!!!!

Take a look at the finger you're pointing and see where the other three are pointing.  You may also want to take a dose of your own medicine and begin practicing what you preach, to do otherwise is to be a HYPOCRITE!!!!

You may also want to revisit the descriptions for these forums and re-educate yourself on what content they are supposed to contain.  For your benefit, here they are:

Hepatitis Forum (This one my friend)

The Hepatitis forum is where you can post your questions about medical issues and research aspects of Hepatitis

Hepatitis Community Forum

Our Patient-to-Patient Hepatitis Community Forum is where you can communicate and share support with other people interested in Hepatitis. This forum is not monitored by medical professionals

Hello r4,

FYI, if you're new here, it's true that certain topics are considered (by Med Help) as more appropriate (re; nondeletable) on the Community side.

Why don't you post over there, as well?  (Go to the top of the page and click Community).

I think your points are quite interesting and I would like to read more.

I've worked for the government for 27 years.  I know how government works.  Occassionally they run threads that are counter to what the public has been told.  They do this in an effort to trolly their own agenda.  This is really not a republican or democrat thing.  It's a government thing.  And it's not an inappropriate statement for this board.  Nygirl is reporting Hepatitis C is on the rise in NYC.  The government says Hepatitis C is on the decline.  One of these statements is in error.

So Grand Oak, whom are we to believe?

And from your post, it quite clear to me that you don't work for the government.  So you're writing about something you really don't understand.  And THAT is called IGNORANCE.

So educate yourself before you write.

Perhaps you need to re-read your post.

It seems to show you were injecting your own accusations of linkages which were not identified in the article above and below the actual excert of the it in your post (i.e. before and after the "***" lines encapsulating the actual article).

Standing upon the article is fine. But, if you wish to pitch out political ideologies or make wild innuendos, then it should be taken to the other forum where such banter is allowed.

"Having sex with multiple partners also puts people at risk."
--------------------
I always wondered if that meant consecutively or at one time and why is it that the good stuff always comes with a price?

You know what's crazy Nygirl, while the rise of Hepatitis C is about to cripple the health care system, the Bush Administration would like you to believe Hepatitis is actually on the decline--yes--DECLINE--read:

***

THURSDAY, March 15 (HealthDay News) -- U.S. rates of infection with hepatitis A, B and C viruses have fallen to historic lows, reducing the threat of liver disease, according to a new federal report.

Infection with these three most common forms of acute viral hepatitis have dropped dramatically between 1995 and 2005, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday. Moreover, the rates of hepatitis A and B are now at their lowest levels since the federal government began collecting data more than 40 years ago, according to the CDC report, Surveillance for Acute Viral Hepatitis -- United States, 2005.

Just have to wonder who the White House is trying to kid???

I think you'll find the *NYPost* article somewhere to the left of the Paris Hilton interview and to the right of the psychological profile of Britney's new boyfriend:)

I guess I must still be suffering from brain fog or tx not only failed me but permanently messed up my eyesight too because I missed any reference to the White House or the current administration in the excerpt you provided.

Forgive me if I'm still suffering from brain fog too, but I don't believe that the current adminstration was in place during the first half of this reporting period either or has there been a Constitutional change defining the office of the Presidency that I've also missed?

It's not secret that the CDC has been down playing this insidious disease and has been doing so for quite some time, even longer than the current administration you so conviently are taking pot shots at, which BTW is more appropriate for the other Med-Help HCV forum and should have no place here.

Simply take a look at their studies where they exclude the incarcerate and homeless, both of which dramatically change the level infected people within the USA.

However and please correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not think that your post was intended to really debate the validity of the CDC's findings or claims!

I am glad to see that it is becoming more aware. just wanted to mention that last time my hubby was in dr's office she asked how I was doing on tx and how long were we iv drug users?!???...what a slap in the face, he told her by the way, we never used iv drugs, I haven't tested positive and she more than likely picked it up from a stick working in the medical field since 1980's before it was a well known concern.
I was told I had hcv in 1999 when I donated plasma. I worked in the medical field since highschool. I have no idea how I got it but would sure like to get rid of it!

It makes me wonder why they so desperately want Hep to be the 'bad' person's disease. My conspiracy minded husband, an ex-Viet Vet, believes the government is trying to hide something. Have you seen the airguns they innoculated soldiers with; a sure fire recipe for spreading virus' such as HIV or HCV. The Vets aren't talking and they sure aren't paying.
As scarey as things are here, it is worse by its absence in other countries. My well traveled, educated dentist in Bangkok had no idea what I was talking about when I told him I had Hepatitis.
We need a coalition of average folks to get our photos taken with Hep C signs and go on U-tube. Maybe the internet is the next venue of protest.
I'll stop rambling. Thankyou nygirl for the info.

Grand Oak.  I stand on the article as written, and particularly the history the article references. The caveats you're adding are your own and are not part of the article.  Furthermore, I think you'd agree that the article runs counter to the statistical reality of the disease--yes?

Yeah, thanks for the link.  I finally broke down and tracked it down and EVEN responded to the 'reporter'.

Jim, Good directions.  (though I found it all by myself)

Sadly, for me consecutively and one at a time has generally meant the same thing.

There are some of us though, that did make the mistake of being one of those (GOD-forbid), drug-users.   It's over 23 years ago in my past though and I'm not that person any more, haven't been for a LONG time.  But, the fact remains, that I have this disease, just like the rest of you.   I'm sorry that you're lumped in with the drug abusers, I know that it's 'not fair' to lump you in with those of us who did make a bad choice at one time in our life.  But, praise God, I did not get any other diseases from those choices that I made.  I did not get HIV, I did not get Hep. B, I just got the other one, Hep C and I just got 2 genotypes(as you know) and I just CAN'T seem to get rid of the thing...........

I looked up the article... Look how they worded that one section!

*****************************************************************

Hepatitis C infects nearly three times as many people as AIDS. Like HIV, it is commonly spread via intravenous needles by those who inject heroin, steroids and other illegal drugs.

"The sharing of equipment and needles between people is usually how this virus gets transmitted," Birkhead said.

Having sex with multiple partners also puts people at risk.

******************************************************************

Umm, Gee... according to that, I wasn't ever at risk....so why would I ever bother getting tested huh!!!
Darn good thing I accidentally got diagnosed & treated... I'd of never ever suspected such a thing...

But... I guess the good thing is just spreading the word & at least hearing about it... prior to my diagnoses in 93... I had never even heard of hep C... much less knew what it was, or where it came from!

IMHO, this rise in reports may be in large part due to the fact that as I understand it, they can now discern between HIV and HCV in tests which has lead to a dramatic increase in co-infection reports, and consequently HCV reports in general.

I recall something, not sure if it was from AASLD conference or not, that this information also may impact the documented number of deaths due to HCV as it is thought that many HIV deaths may be due to HCV due to the now understood higher rate of co-infections.

I also recall seeing something, from Europe I believe, that an HIV research project may have also identified something HCV related which is theorized to possible be a link to a potential cure.  Wouldn't that be a blessing?

They need to add that it is spreading to the general population and everyone needs to be screened.
A lot of people will think if they are not a Junkie or a Hoe, they are safe.
