Pneumonia, Empyema

My Friend has had Pneumonia, Empyema was in the hospital for a week while they weren't sure he'd made it through  surgery then recovered, he was home for 6 weeks following the hospital stay and is back at work now.  He is still experiencing severe pain during even mild exersise or any even mildly heavy breathing.  He is having problems at work due to this and is the only one working in his household due to his wife's medical issues.  His doctor gives him motrin for during work hours and a muscle relaxer for at home but it knocks him out (puts him to sleep) now he is getting depressed due to the severe pain at work and either pain or sleeping at home.  I should mention it has almost been 1 year since he was admitted to the hospital originally he is looking for something that will stop or dampen the pain without knocking him out so that he can get back to a somewhat normal life. Any suggestions?

Oops, sorry it is a controlled substance. I suggested it because it worked ok for me without the sleepiness.

He may have luck with Opana which is not a controlled drug.
