Question for a friend

Hi all,
A good friend of mine just received a letter from blood donation that he can't donate blood bc he was reactive to hep c antibody.  But the letter said they did further test and he does not have the viral in his blood.  I am not exactly sure what that means so is he cured and no more hep c?  So we both read that he will never be able to give blood bc of his positive antibody?  Is he contagious?
Is there a vaccine for hep c?  I know there is one for hep b bc I got it but not sure about hep c.  If him and I want to be more than friends ... Would this be a problem ?  I know it's not a std perse but can only be transmit thru blood.  Is condom a 100% protective?

Thanks so much for your help and God bless, S

To answer your last question If the RNA test says he is negative then he has nothing to worry about as he is one of the lucky ones... Congrats!

If they ran a PCR blood test and it's true he does not have a viral load then yes he is "cured" which happens in up to 25% of people infected as their own immune system beats it back. What makes me wonder though is that I have never known them to go any further then the antibody test so I would really want this confirmed.

No there is no vaccine for hep C.

"Is he contagious"

No not if he has no viral load and just the antibodies, they are harmless to him and anyone else. And no Hep C is not a STD and Not common to transmit through sex. If he doesn't have a viral load nobody has anything to worry about... Best to both of you.

Also the letter said RNA test was performed and he is negative and supplemental test was negative.... Does that mean he doesn't have HCV?
