Serum iron

I'd be really interested in getting a better handle on the whole issue of elevated iron and what impact it might have on ultimate response to tx.

Personally, I started out with a pre-tx baseline showing elevated ferritin at 219 ng/mL (normal range 10-170).   Iron was also high at 189 ug/dL (normal range 35-160).   T & S percentage was 50% -- normal, but borderline.  Luckily, my latest biopsy showed no iron saturation.

The research I've seen on this is provocative -- just enough to make me nervous -- but hardly conclusive.   I'm still not clear about the relative importance of serum iron levels vs. tissue stores.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?    Thanks!

Hey thanks everyone for all your support and well wishes!

Doll face,  I was on Peg-intron.  After one year my sides are all gone except I am now hypo-thyroid which is no big deal and a fair trade :)

Good luck to everyone.  I know we'll beat this.

Sam, you just need to get an acoustic guitar and just practice John's trademark intro to almost any of his songs. Its just a 7 note bass run between open A, open D, and open E low. ( 5th string, 4th string, and 6th string). It sure sounds good and anyone can learn it ...

Honey::::Hope you get rid of that yukky pain soon.......sometimes mine would last about 1 week before going away, stay away for about 1 month, and come back again.... When ever I would stretch to the left with my right arm up over my head, I could feel the "stitch" and pulling.....even when it did not hurt at the time.

Chev:::::Hey, you have been kind of quiet lately???? Hope all is going well........been thinking about you.

This could be serious, esse.   I'd keep a lid on it, a nice heavy iron one, doncha think?   In the meantime, take a couple tylenol and call me in the morning.

Thanks for the good feedback.  I've tried all the usual tricks to reduce iron (short of phlebotomy) but this is as good as it get, apparently.   And obviously these levels could be way higher...so I think I'll stop sweating it and just keeping popping and injecting.   All the rest is theory, wot?

Girlwithcurl, a thousand congratulations to you on kicking this virus to smithereens.  Way to go!

My struggle is harsh and I come back
with eyes tired
at times from having seen
the unchanging earth,
but when your laughter enters
it rises to the sky seeking me
and it open for me all
the doors of life.

(from Pablo Neruda,  TU RISA / Your Laughter )

From one 1A to another, That is such good news to hear. Congratulations. Since we are the hardest to treat it makes it all that much nicer to hear of someone with this genotype clearing and beating this dragon. How excited you must be.

If you don't mind me asking What type of tx were you on? How long did you treat? and How long before you started feeling better after tx? Sorry for being so nosy just getting excited about finishing up here soon.   Thanks Kim

hey!  I have not researched this extensively, but my basic understanding, and the reason we are told NOT to take vitamins with iron in them, is because the liver cannot properly process is, resulting in iron overload..which is not a good thing with hepc.!   People who have too much iron are encouraged to give blood to relieve themselves of some of the excess iron..but, of course.. that is not the answer for us..
Have you discussed this with your doc??  I am sure that you've probably seen this site, but just incase . here's the link...has some good info..

Hi, all I can really offer on the subject is my own experience with iron/overload. Hemochromatosis (HHC) genes will cause the liver and other organs to absorb the iron. If both mutations are present it can be extremely dangerous and can cause cirrhosis all by itself. But for anyone with liver disease it's much worse. I found out that even one of the genes can cause additional problems for the liver with HCV.
Most docs call the high iron "acute phase reaction" to HCV. I have been told again and again, "it won't hurt you and it's nothing to worry about"!
I was looking around on line trying to figure it all out as my Ferritin had been around 1500 for over 10 years! I had many symptoms of Hemochromatosis, elevated iron/ferritin high TIBC %... (re: a gene study) except I had only one of the genes required of the two to be officially diagnosed with HHC. I was about to give up when I accidentally found a study that showed HCV patients with a high occurrence of liver iron stores with only one HHC gene present!?
It took me 3 years to find a doc that would use phlebotomy to get my iron down. He's a iron/overload specialist and said it is very harmful for all aspects of health! I trusted him and did a biopsy and CT. Results came back and sure enough my liver was absorbing iron! I don't know if 2 grams is a lot for a liver to absorb but I am waiting to see if symptomatically I will feel better with the phlebotomys and if the depression and other weird things that have been going on will subside some.

As far as TX and iron it usually drops from TX. I've heard and read different opinions as some docs get it down before starting TX and some don't. To many variables to consider like stage and progression of disease. Tx stops bone marrow production and it seems dumb to vampire someone before the TX as it seems to have the same affect on most.
It's an individual disease who knows why some clear on tx, some don't, some have bad sides, some don't, some are dying after 2 years and I'm getting better after 24 years. As usual I'm clueless! Be well and good luck to all...
