There are soooooooo many amazing cafes in SF it is just so wonderful. I do miss that city - if at all possible and I have the energy my section 8 coupon move to SF would be a blessing!
Hope your french press doesnt break but the AeroPress is really a different (and in my opinion) a much better beast - as well as the clean up is a blessing! and of course, if you do a YouTube search of the AeroPress people are doing their own thing ... such as using it upside down which gives you a bit more control (that is how I am using it now myself).
Just a bit more info - Oh, and this is an extraction machine which means you add extra water to make the coffee strength you want. I have made an extraction and put it into an ice tray for those hot days... add a cube or two to milk, shake and wait a bit and ya have a nice cool cafe/milkshake.
I just saw an AeroPress.at Peerless coffee in Oakland, where I get my coffee.
They look good but I've already got my french press.
Maybe when this one breaks, I'll think about the aeropress.
BTW: For years I got my coffee from Freed, Teller and Freed on Polk st.
They closed years ago~ but now, I love Peerless.
"I have to admit, I am back to the Mr Coffee (auto-drip) which I know isn't as healthy (or flavorful) as the techniques you suggested."
Good point that hasnt been brought up and that most dont know about... espresso uses less coffee since is uses pressure to extract the coffee... pressure and faster with less acid = tastier in mho Yummy! and Healthier!
To be honest, I havent seen too many options to make more than a double espresso making machine but there are larger sized Moka stove top pots that make six or eight cups (I think). Hopefully ya will have someone to relax and share all that Moka Java with, lol!
Having lived in Japan for nearly 10 years I can agree with you also about the green teas... even the serving in the small pots/ceremony is so "cool" and really does put you in another mind space *** along with some yummy Japanese sweets!
Enjoy all.
I havent tried them yet, so thanks for the tip, Frank, plus the other ones :)
I have to admit, I am back to the Mr Coffee (auto-drip) which I know isn't as healthy (or flavorful) as the techniques you suggested. I did a Molita drip for years, but it's only for single use, and not a whole pot~
I am glad that coffee is a healthy alternative,
because I really feel like we all need to have these kind of pleasant rewards in our lives. It gives or brain a little signal that it is time to relax, and unwind (in a wired manner, lol)
I also like tea time, mostly black and green teas, and not the herbal~
Same here. I dont know when I became a coffee freak but it hit me hard.
Now I have a decent espresso/milk frothing machine but those babies take a lot of care = time!
Love my little Moka stove top pot. The image of old Italian grandmothers making espresso - but so quick and yummy (near) espresso. Found mine at a TJMaxx in a nice set for under $20. Gotta be careful as it is a basic pressure cooker & one must never fill over the safety line!!!
A great NEW one to look for is called an AeroPress. It is based on a French Press but those are soooooo messy. This is very simple and easy to clean up. Uses small paper filters that are re-usable!!! and when used properly doesnt add the acidity giving a super smooth cup.
Not available in small cities like mine but Amazon and other mail order coffee based stores have the AeroPress and I really recommend it (around $20 too).
BoceprevirGal - being in SF maybe you are already aware of the Castro Cheesery (also known as The Castro Coffee Company online) in San Francisco in the Castro. A tiny shop that says they sale more coffee than McDonalds, lol. Having moved back to Pennsylvania I am still ordering my beans from these guys as they are of such great value even with the rising cost of shipping! Super fresh roasting and great customer service. If you dont know them give them a try!
I was never able to work up to 3 cups, but I did have my second expresso, the other day. I should think the stronger coffee may count as a cup and a half.
I did best with coffee and steamed milk...mmmm
All I know is what I've read. Since I like coffee anyway I upped my consumption after my transplant and during tx.
I like the idea of things that are benign at worst and can help at best.
Coffee is one of those.
If it doesn't disagree with you, why not give it a try ?
I'm several weeks into treament.
Would it still be helpful for me start drinking coffee?
Reva
Not all doctors are up on the research. The reason they say not to drink coffee is because it's a mild diuretic. The simple solution, drink more water !
I never drank coffee until I was in my 20's. Never cared for the taste at all! But I've found that if I add the French vanilla creamer, I add extra so I don't need to use sugar, I love it. The cold creamer cools the coffee, adds sweetness without adding sugar, and covers the bitterness I hated before. And the creamers they have come in sooo many favors. Even York peppermint patty and Cinnabon flavor lol. I'd say start trying different coffees, like light roast, Colombian, etc, mixed with different creamers. You may find a mix you like.
Thanks for the info.
I was definitely told not to consume too much coffee or cola drinks.
See what you learn everyday.
My doctor recently told me to do Vit D. I heard that here before it was suggested to me. Now I've started D3 to combat my low D.
You guys constantly inform...it unbelievable,
Thanks,
Reva
You don't have to drink it. Many have achieved SVR without drinking it.
It's only recently that studies have shown it to be beneficial.
If you're going to begin, then start with just one cup daily and slowly increase.
You can add sugar or honey and definitely milk or half and half.
Drink it how you like. I like mine black but used milk during tx due to a change in my taste buds.
I NEVER drank coffee in my whole life. Hate it. So knowing that coffee is a GOOD thing for our livers, I have tried to drink some. YUK. Headache. Is it okay to put creamer in it? I guess it is - but even with that, the headache comes on and I feel nauseous. Here I thought all these years that not drinking coffee was a good thing.
How do I drink this stuff? I know I prefer it room temperature - and the creamer makes it that way. Any suggestions?
~ and very well can help :)
3+ cups of coffee, 1000mcg vitamin B12 and 1000-2000 IU vitamin D won't hurt.
I started tx in March and my tx team made a point of telling me that it is now known that coffee is definitely a good thing to continue, or maybe increase since I didn't drink a lot of coffee.

Background & Aims
The severity of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is modulated by host and environmental factors. Several reports suggest that caffeine intake exerts hepatoprotective effects in patients with chronic liver disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of caffeine consumption on activity grade and fibrosis stage in patients with CHC.
Methods
A total of 238 treatment-naïve patients with histologically-proven CHC were included in the study. Demographic, epidemiological, environmental, virological, and metabolic data were collected, including daily consumption of alcohol, cannabis, tobacco, and caffeine during the six months preceding liver biopsy. Daily caffeine consumption was estimated as the sum of mean intakes of caffeinated coffee, tea, and caffeine-containing sodas. Histological activity grade and fibrosis stage were scored according to Metavir. Patients (154 men, 84 women, mean age: 45±11years) were categorized according to caffeine consumption quartiles: group 1 (678mg/day, n=60).
Results
There was a significant inverse relationship between activity grade and daily caffeine consumption: activity grade>A2 was present in 78%, 61%, 52%, and 48% of patients in group 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively (pA2 (OR=0.32 (0.12–0.85). Caffeine intake showed no relation with fibrosis stage.
Conclusions
Caffeine consumption greater than 408mg/day (3 cups or more) is associated with reduced histological activity in patients with CHC. These findings support potential hepatoprotective properties of caffeine in chronic liver diseases.

Good, and it's good that it's good. My first research question, when considering tx. I'm sure someone will post a link any moment now.
C
There was a study, done by HALT, I think they used less then 1000 people in the study, and I have only read about the one study, but it did indicate that people drinking 3 cups of coffee a day, cleared the virus at a rate 0f 33% more, then folks who didn't drink it.
You can google the study, it should be under "Hep C Tx, HALT cofee drinking" etc~
Now, I have always loved coffee, and anytime I felt nauseous on Tx, I would eat a nice meal, and drink a ancy cup of organic coffee :0
I have really pampered myself on this Tx. I think drinking the coffee also helped my depression.
By the way, there have been no studies saying coffee is bad, on Tx. Just make sure you have a scone or something with it, to absorb the acids, as the PI's also tend to be acidic, etc~
I have drank coffee daily, and I am on week 27 of a airly easy Triple Tx. Now, I have to admit, drinking 3 cups a day is too much for my nerves. I live near San Francisco, and the Bay Area coffee shops have much stronger coffee than other places I have been, in th U.S.
I try ot drink organic coffee, to avoid the pesticides, etc
