please help me remember who posted on itching/rash

Tonight itching went to an all new level. I think I'm on shot 7 this week. I've dealt w/ this with some success. This is mind boggling. It's like the fleas of a 1,000 camels just landed on my body. Bumpy too.
Feelin kinda twitchy, laughing under my breath at the weirdness of it all, Karen :p

I had the Ribavirin rash that started gradually and eventually ended up everywhere. Tried everything but it wouldnt clear. So I found a journal article about the rash which recommended removing the pt from Ribavirin temporarily. My doctor agreed and after I stopped taking it, the rash cleared. I started the RIBA again, one pill a day at first, now I am at two a day. No rash!

There was  just a post about using oatmeal, yes oatmeal to relieve itching.
If I recall, they ground it fine and made a paste. Put it on, let it dry and then rinse off. Maybe someone better at searching than I am, can dig it up for you.
It sounded great, easy, cheap, nontoxic but messy.

I had the Telap rash during trial took benadryl double doeses, prescribtion cortisone cream. Lokked like a giant welt, too bad it wasn't Halloween:) At 6 weeks virus broke thru and dropped from trial I hate prednisone but I was never so happy to take it. Also only use oatmeal products and Dove sensitive skin.
I had Riba rash on this treat with VIC and found the prescription cortisone ointment works better than the cream and helps the dry skin also.
I have scars on my arms from Telap trial.

The itching for me has been the worse SE. I feel like I have flees and creepy crawly things under my skin. My scalp is the worse. I have tried everything, it all works for a while along with Nioxin shampoo which worked for about two weeks. I now sleep with oil all over my scalp. This a,m, I got up and did a steam with body oil. I have had no itching today and I have not had to do an antihistamine. Benadryl puts me right to sleep (1/2) and Allergra and Claritin wire me out. But I have decided I would rather be wired then itchy.! A day without itching is a good day!

I am doing victrelis  I have no rash, no dry skin just itch.

Although the use of Prednizone is usually not recommended with Incivek, it may be required in some cases.  Sometimes you run out of options, and it sounds like this was the case for you.  Sorry to hear it got so bad.  Hope this resolves the rash and allows you to continue trt with no more issues.  Good luck to you.

Pooh55811,
This is very helpful, thank you. Dr. said that Zantac is an H2 histamine blocker, while Claritin blocks another histamine (sorry, don't remember which one) and Benadryl can help sleep at night. This wasn't working, so got prescription for Triamcinolone, itchiness went away, but the pain stayed. Hives on body started to dry out and crust, but at the same time the rash moved to hands and arms with addition of eczema and this weird feeling of goosebumps.

Latest development, rash moved to face and ears, all red, swollen, puffy and generally looking like a horror movie double. Started to develop an eye discharge, not pink eye, but would wake up with swollen and crusted eyes. Started Prednizone today. Feel a bit better, eyes still swollen. I remember reading mremeet's (spelling) description and mine is pretty similar. 2 wks and 6 days of incivek to go.

I am on triple med treatment with Incivek (although the Incivek is now finished).

When I had a minor rash (about weeks 2 through 10) I used Benadryl 25 mg at night and Hydrocortizone cream on the rash itself. I also used Keri lotion all over. At week about week 11 my rash decided to really blossom and became a lot worse. The red bumps were piled all over each other and on top of each other. The itching was pretty severe. It started on my forarms and then my thighs and abdoment. Then it moved to my lower legs and upper arms.

For this I used Benadryl 50 mg. each night, Zyrtec 10 mg daily in the am, and prescription fluocinonide ointment applied to the rash itself. This worked. (The over the counter hydrocortizone cream did nothing for this particular rash but the fluocinonide ointment worked well.) I have been using this combo since just before Christmas (Dec. 23).

If I were you I would talk with my doctor and get something that works. Piling on over the counter stuff that is not working does not do a lot of good. Taking 50 mg Benadryl at night and taking either Zyrtec or Claritin 1 tab in the am is useful. I would not take both Zyrtec and Claritin. Some doctors prescribe other meds such as atarax insted of the over the counter stuff. If the cream is not working, get your doctor to order something like fluocinonide ointment. It is a steroid ointment but it sure works, whereas the hydrocortizone cream quit working for the more severe rash. I am not sure why the fluocinonide oint. works better. Perhaps it is a bit stronger or perhaps it is because it is an ointment and it stays on the skin (whereas the cream rubs off easily).

Zantac is for the stomach so that would not have any effect on your rash or itching. I don't think Ibuprofen is going to help the rash or itching either.

One thing I found is you may have to push the doc. to order something that works. Mine waited a bit too long and it got out of hand and then the rash took much longer to start clearing. I still have the original spots but they do not itch much now. However, the rash (and itching) moves around. I get one set of bumps or area cleared up and then another area starts up.

I hope you find something that works.

Rx for 20 mg Reactine, Benadryl at night x 2, hypoallergenic lotion straight out of the shower every morning, Gold Bond powder (more drying but it works better for me than the lotion).

When I have a spot that's really bad I put Benadryl anti itch lotion (more like a gel) on it, then plaster that with Gold Bond (the green one with blue top).

I tried baby oil on my stomach belt line and my back, both spots now having scabs from scratching so much, but it made the itch 1000000 x worse!  So I won't be trying that again.

My Dr. prescribed atarax. But unfortunately cannot say much. My itching episode was late at night and I got the pills the next day. However there was no itching since then and I did not use pills yet.

Week 8 of Tela/Riba/Interferon Tx.

Poison Ivy like rash and itching. All other side effects seem very minor compared to this right now.

Benadryl at night, hydrocortizone 1% twice a day, Claritin, Zantac x2 /day, just got new cream from my dr (not sure it is working). Read about Zyrtec, thinking of adding it to the mix, anything to get me through the day. Somewhere read about ibuprofen, added that too.  Tried Gold Bond, worked for 2 hrs, then seemed to make things worse.

Any other tips from those who have gone through this?

This wont help the itching you already have probably but might help to keep it from getting worse. I use baby oil in the tub. The nurse told me to lotion my whole body twice a day, no perfumes or hot water. The baby oil helps when you cant reach lol and is so much easier. Sarna lotion also helps. It is an anti itch lotion at wal-mart. Oatmeal soap as mentioned :) itchy is miserable for sure......

I used Zyrtec (OTC...which is similar to Atarac Rx) during the day and Benadryl at night.  I also cut all the tags out of my clothing and wore silky, slippery material and ditched the bra when I could by covering up with a jacket.  I would have to later up with lotion 2-3 times a day (Eucerin body cream or Aveeno oatmeal lotion) and I would take an oatmeal bath as often as needed...at least once a day.  It was a chore fitting all this in all while working full time.  I also would take hydrocortisone cream and mix a small amount into my lotions that were applied to my back by my husband because usually the itching was worse on my back and my sides/rib area.

I would take a bag to work with me that was full of all types of remedies to get me through the day such as extra riba in case I forgot to take it before leaving for work, lotions, lip balm, vagisil, lotions, hydrocortisone cream, eye drops...and the list goes one).

Keep at it, it will get better.  I recall that in the midst of my worse itching time period, I told my husband that I believe that I would go completely mad from itching.

I can relate on the itching. I dont have a rash, but I do get raised bumps usually after the incivek dose.

And the itch is by far worse than the fatigue, at least for me.
Realistically, its just majorly annoying and I dislike inconvenience.

Start of Week 4.

I have been using florasone cream (natural cortizone substitute), oatmeal body wash, and lotion.
oh yeah-benedryl at night.

I am going to try cortizone this weekend.

I too am miserable with itching. I just began week 10 of incivek. The rash doesn't look that bad but the itching is intense. I have been taking allergy meds all along but now added even more on the advise of my doc. So far cortisone cream, benedryl, gold bond cream not really helping. Used an anti itch head n shoulders shampoo on flycyclist recommendation which helped some with my scalp (and the hair looks good-smells good too!).Still up a lot of the night. Doc is talking about stopping incivek early. I hate to do that with only 2 weeks left. Doc does not want to use rx strength cortisones topical. Don't know why. I hope you find some relief crossroadsec! Good Luck. If you find anything that works please let me know and I will do the same,
G

I posted on it to you, but I unfortunately don't have any perfect answers for getting rid of the rash.  It's more of a matter of getting through, coping with it, etc.  I found an oral-pill treatment actually helped me more with the itching than did the creams.  It was Atarax.  I also found that hot showers and baths made it much worse as did the sun.  I wish you SVR and relief from your itching.  Susan400

Karen:
I posted quite a bit about my rash experience which was horrendous but at Week #22, is under control.  Message me if you would like the list of prescriptions that I got from my derma who has worked with Hep C patients for quite awhile.  Hope you feel better.

Haven't started Tx myself, but with some (horrified) fascination have been reading posts and taking notes on what's coming my way.
Remedies recommended for inclusion in your arsenal alongside the small vat of hydrocortisone include oatmeal baths, benadryl spray, vinegar spritzer (after showers), and Vistaril (antihistamine, antianxiety).
Then there's the ammo for the other body parts...
Stay cool,

I had intense itching episodes during tx too. Its great you're keeping a sense of humor, it will pass.
When it happened to me I cut all the labels out of my shirts, switched to silk, used oatmeal soap and other oatmeal based products. They helped~some.

Good luck.
