Hello. I had needle stick injury with HEP C dialysis needle

Im a nurse. I was removing a dialysis needle from a hepatitic C patient. Patient suddenly jerked and the needle pricked my left thumb and i could see blood flowing out within my glove. After 2-3mins i went to the sink & squeezed out my blood under running water.

Patient had 1yr Interferon treatment ended on 25/4/2015. Blood tests were HCV RNA Negative on 5/10/2015 and 21/4/2017. Will i get HCV from this? I am so PARANOID noww!!

If you are really concerned you could wait a few months and get tested but if this person is cured, not a problem,

As both Dee and hrsepwrguy have said as the patient tests not detected with the HCV RNA test they do not have hep c so they cannot transmit an infection they no longer have. You are not at risk.

Hi Dee, hi hrsepwrguy!
Thank you everyone for answering my question!! You guys made me relieved. Not so worry about it anymore! God bless you guys!

That's right you can't pass on what you don't have.

Hi Dee

Have a great day
Thank you Dee1956! How accurate is HCV RNA Qualitative? Non detected means ZERO virus in the body? I read some articles mentioned results can be “non detected” eventhough there’re VERY small viral load in the body, some may still living in the liver...(eg. Occult HCV?).
The HCV RNA test is conclusive. If a person has treated and has SVR12 that is a sustained viral response 12 weeks after EOT that is considered to be cured. If any virus had been present at EOT below detectable levels it would come roaring back by 12 weeks post.

Hep c virus does not hide
