A fine day in NY

I went to Mt Sinai today for my end of treatment visit.  I took my last Riba last night and woke up this morning very optimistic about life.  I left the hospital which is on Fifth Avenue and within a minute, I forgot all about HepC!

As soon as I hit the street, I could hear the deep pounding of base drums, the staccato of snare drums and the sound of bagpipes!  No city in the world can through a celebration like NY and it is wonderful to see it celebrate the Irish heritage since the Irish made such incredible contributions to NY and the entire country.  It made me very proud to be a New Yorker.

It’s amazing to me how events can trigger memories from the distant past.  One of the benefits of being 67 is that I remember a time when America experienced one of its finest hours:  I remembered seeing a parade when I was five years old.  It was the celebration of the end of World War II and I got to see the parade led by General Eisenhower up Broadway!

My uncle worked in an office on lower Broadway just south of Wall Street.  We drove to the office early in the morning and had to wait hours as the troops gathered at South Ferry.  The harbor was full of Navy ships and the sense of anticipation was excruciating.  I was five years old and a few hours are an eternity at that age.

My uncle handed me a box of ticker tape and told me to wait until he told me to throw it.  All of a sudden every church in NY began to ring its bells and the Navy ships began to fire their guns.  Even though they were blanks, the noise was incredible and some windows started to break from the concussions.   I could see a jeep with General Eisenhower in it start to move up  Broadway and the air filled with ticker tape so thick it looked like it was snowing.  The jeep passed my window and my uncle said “Throw the tape.”  I threw my tape and felt so proud of America.

Libby: The intercoastal does sound interesting, so maybe I will do that and charter in the Caribbean a couple of weeks a year.

Elaine: I treated 8 times in total.  I am starting to feel substantially better after being off the drugs only a few days.  I had one anxiety attack about a relapse, but that is only normal after an experience like this:).

Why not buy a smaller boat and sail on the intercoastal.  It goes all up and down the state of FL.  Also, you could sail around the tips of FL and come into Port Canaveral - if you time it right, you might even see a Space Shuttle go up before their program ends!  Just a thought.

I hope you enjoy yourself and recuperate from treatment.

Thank you both for all the support.

Elaine:  I have not bought a boat yet.  Mafalda does not want to take any more long range cruises, so we are spending a lot of time talking about what to do.  I will always sail, but it might be a small boat that I just sail locally.  You are always in my thoughts.

Dee, are you in treatment now?  I have been so out of it for the last six months that I don't really remember what people have been saying.  I must be feeling better now, because I feel like writing again.

Congrats on finishing tx! I wish you the very best- I've watched you through this journey and admired your strength and wonderful way with words. Your description of the parade on Broadway was incredible- made me feel like I was there! I love NY- just went there for the 2nd time in Feb with my Mum. It's so alive, that city, with this amazing sense of extravagance... everything has so much style and beauty there- it's larger than life. Expensive, too- but worth every penny to experience it!
  Congrats, hugs and prayers,
Dee

Scratchinghead: MOMA is a great museum.  I hope your daughter gets to love NY as much as I do.

IamTheWalrus:  Too bad we couldn't meet.  I head back to Florida tomorrow.

What a great story!. You have a gift for this. I remember Ike, too, but as a presidential candidate only.

Congrats on your last treatment! By coincidence, I am in NY also, but out in Rockland. So, I missed the fun in the city today.

St Bart's sounds good to me!  I'll let everybody know when I get a boat.

Since I wrote the post about WWII, I keep thinking about then and now.  Then, everyone supported the war: they bought war bonds, sent their family off to battle, gave up meat and gasoline and sacrificed for the common good.

Now, supporting the war means putting on a bumper sticker and refusing to send your kids or pay for the war with taxes.  Instead our government makes us pay for the war with inflation, the meanest tax possible for salaried people.  The same people who refuse to really support it, are the first to defend it when evidence comes to light how foolish the whole thing is.

Ironically, TX probably saved my financial ***...As I got sicker on tx, I basically lost interest in the markets last Summer and just hung out in mm funds and cd's (I'll give myself a pat on the back for nabbing some of those countrywide 5.65%'s(g)) Just a few trades here and there. So I here I am, down 3.5% since Oct. in my brokerage acc's.. I find myself feeling forced back into the markets here testing the January lows to lock in the additional buying power gained. I'm firing a few spread birdshot buys in the broad index etf's and a few focused..(but won't hestitate to cut and run-conserving capital is still job #1)
SPY,DIA,IWM,QQQQ,XLF,XLV, and XLU...And my current long shot-EME

dmrdh: Thanks - you are not far behind!

Pro: Thanks for the good wishes and I agree 100% about being weaned off of TX.

I sold my financial shorts today.  I have no idea where this is going now.  I don't know if we are closer to the end or the beginning.  I will probably get back in the shorts if there is a substantial rally.

It sounds like you did pretty well youself!

It's odd ending treatment (although you aren't tx naive) I was thinking about it this morning, it's like being switched to formula as a baby, having you security blanky, first cut in half and then in half again, and then, one day it'staken away completely! And now, being weaned off the tx teat!!! (lol)
best of luck

Congrats on completing your treatment!!!! I had to laugh when you mentioned snapping the sharps container closed for the final time....I had the exact same thought W/last injection....In fact I took it to my local hospital the following day for disposal....Best of luck in attaining treatment success!!!! (and that was also one helluva call on shorting the financials--g)

You just brought history alive for us, the pride,  the noise,  the ticker tape!  General Eisenhower, the sounds of guns from the ships. Those are the moments that make you proud.

That you saw it and remember it so well is amazing,  I do hope you got to throw some today as well!
