What to expect from buldge disk surgery?

Hi all I'm 32 and recently got not great news about my back. I have had degenerative disc issues for years in my lower back 3weeks ago i had my left leg go numb and swell up horribly. I had to have ct scan and the found i have a buldge disc in lower back sitting on my nerve to my left leg. I will be starting physio soon but they are suggesting back surgery as i am extreme pain and all the treatments over last 3weeks has not relived my pain. As i am 32 this idea is making me super nervous and hoping for some feed back on this please.
