Beginning stages

I am a 45 year old woman who recently had sex with a man who has herpes and didn't tell me till afterward. I now know he is on Valtrex and was not having an outbreak but I was wondering what the beginning symptoms are and what I should look for  and when?

Should I see a dr?

People with hsv2 genital prefer to have a partner with it also. You might get tested now as maybe your positive from before as quite a few people have this. If you negative, having sex even using a condom would put you at risk as also shedding takes place where the virus comes to the skin surface without a lesion and could be contracted at that time.

Hsv2 genital means shedding can take place anywhere in the boxer short area so basicly from the waist down.

So if I was to continue to see this person in a relationship, what precautions are the best method to use?

At this point not necessary to see a doctor. Him taking surpessive meds does lower the risk for you contacting and the use of condoms also adds to your protection.
Just keep an eye out in the next 2 to 12 days for any sores and can test in 3 months.
